Stivers’ luck runs out early in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (October 29, 2007) - After earning the No. 6 qualifying spot in the AMS Pro Mod Challenge at the ACDelco Vegas NHRA Nationals with a 6.102/236.46, Lexington Ky.'s Rick Stivers thought luck was on his side again. He had celebrated his first AMS win at the last event in Richmond, Va. and was planning on the momentum carrying through to this weekend - but the luck ran out.

On paper, Stivers was heavily favored against No. 11 qualifier Kenny Lang, whose best time of the weekend was a 6.17, and off the line, Stivers had a full tenth advantage against the slower reacting Lang; but that's when the luck ran out. Stivers took a hard right, then a left, and by the time he corrected the car, Lang had already blasted to a 6.115 and taken the win.

"Chuck [Ford, crew chief] and Rick, Jr. had the car running so well all weekend, but we just couldn't get a handle on the track that round," Stivers said.

"It's definitely not what we were looking for, but it was still an awesome way to finish out the year. I feel like we finally got things moving in the right direction, with Chuck, and Tim Tindle and the whole team, we've got momentum for 2008 - and that's a great thing," he said.

Stivers ended the season in ninth place overall in BAE Championship points, and said he plans to keep moving up the ladder in 2008.

"It's been a long year, and I'm looking forward to next year. I'm going to take some time off racing and then hit it hard after the first of the year," he said.
