Normally, a driver who had not made a competitive lap in over a month takes it easy the first time back on the track. But throughout his young career, Australian Andrew Cowin has proved he is not just any driver.
Driving in IHRA competition for the first time since winning an Ironman at the Suzuki Motor City Nationals in Milan, Mich. A month and a half ago, Cowin ran a clean pass down the groove, clocking a 4.704 pass at 316.67 mph to give Crew Chief Lance Larson vital information on the racing surface while putting himself solidly in the qualifying field at the Skull Shine World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.
“We wanted to go out and put a solid lap on the car,” Cowin said of his Scott Griffin Motorsports/Serta Mattresses race team. “The car launched well so I just stayed in the run. We will take the information we got today and set up the car to really go after the track tomorrow. It felt great to be back out there, great for this entire team. We all love being out at the track and taking care of business on the track, we hope to take care of more business tomorrow.”
Cowin moved into the provisional #5 qualifying position with Friday's effort, but his pass was the second-fastest of the session behind provisional #1 qualifier Hillary Will's 322.11 mph run.
“The car was charging hard at the finish line,” Cowin said. “Lance and Keith (Stewart) really did a great job setting the car up for tonight's run. This is going to be an exciting weekend.”
The Scott Griffin Motorsports/Serta Mattresses team will look to improve their qualifying position at the two Saturday qualifying sessions. Final eliminations are set for Sunday afternoon.
