Cowin Vaults to Top of Qualifying Sheet
Sets Milan Dragway speed record in Friday qualifying at Suzuki Motor City Nationals

Andrew Cowin made a big splash in his return to IHRA competition. The driver of the Scott Griffin Motorsports/Serta Mattresses Top Fuel Dragster, returning to the eMax Drag Racing Series for the first time since advancing to the final of the Spring Nationals in Rockingham, set the Milan Dragway Top Fuel speed record and claimed the provisional pole position with a 4.659 pass at 319.90 mph during the Friday qualifying session of the Suzuki Motor City Nationals.

Cowin broke the previous speed record of 317.49 mph set by five-time IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Clay Millican last year during the Motor City Nationals. It was a welcome return for the Scott Griffin Motorsports team after a 2 ½ month hiatus from the IHRA circuit.

“It feels really good Friday night to not have to worry about making the field,” Griffin said. “We tried some new things with the fuel system and everything worked out well. I had a really good feeling about this weekend, now I feel even better.”

Cowin was thrilled with the run, his first in the IHRA since losing a close race to Cory McClenathan in the finals at Rockingham. That race took place in late April.

“That was a really great run,” Cowin said. “The team did an incredible job getting the car ready for this race, without them I couldn’t put together runs like this. With the way this car is running and how good the track is I think we have a good shot at getting that first win this weekend.”

The team will be back in action Saturday with another qualifying session beginning at 2 p.m.
