INDIANAPOLIS – Not long after finishing his final Sunday qualifying run, Greg Stanfield and crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia knew they needed to make an engine change before Monday’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals eliminations at Lucas Oil Raceway.
Stanfield’s quickest run of 6.663 seconds at 206.20 mph put the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks Pro Stock GXP into the 13th starting slot and up against Allen Johnson (No. 4, 6.623 at 208.33) in the first round.
“We have been struggling,” said Stanfield, who is the defending race champion. “We needed to make a change. We tested this engine earlier in the week and it ran well.”
This is the regular-season finale that sets the Countdown to 1 playoff berths. Stanfield is eighth, which is where he began last year’s Countdown.
