Stanfield loses in first round; will start playoffs from No. 8 spot (1 Viewer)

INDIANAPOLIS – Greg Stanfield was a man of few words on a cold Monday afternoon following his opening-round Pro Stock loss to Allen Johnson in the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway.

“It was not a fun day,” said the defending race champion. “We have some issues and we have to figure out whether they’re in the car or the engine.”

Crew chiefs threw away their three days’ worth of tune-up notes when the temperatures went from the low 100 degrees to the mid-50s over night and elapsed times improved.

Johnson jumped into the lead and stayed there, crossing the finish line in 6.589 seconds, 209.39 mph while Stanfield’s Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP recorded its best run of the weekend at 6.623, 208.39 mph.

“We need to work on the motors and get our baseline (tune-up) back,” commented crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia. “And then we must figure out why we ran better during testing (last week) than we did (Monday). We have a lot of work to do in a short period of time.”

Stanfield will start the Countdown to the Championship from eighth place (923 points). The six-race event begins Sept. 18 at Concord, N.C.
