Reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion and 2006 U.S. Nationals Champion, Matt Smith headed into the U.S. Nationals in the No. 1 spot going into Monday’s eliminations.
Running killer six second passes all weekend with his Nitrofish Buell at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, Smith captured the Full Throttle Challenge Award and looked as the one to beat on raceday.
Heading into first round, Smith had to face off against Michael Phillips. Cutting a great light and running low elapse time for the round, Smith won his ninth round of racing in a row; as he has won the last two races in a row on tour.
Smith had to run last year’s U.S. Nationals Champ, Craig Treble second round and Smith was on yet another stellar pass. However after leading at half track Smith’s motor locked up, forcing Smith to abort and lose the round.
“Man, we had a good weekend going until now,” said Smith. “This bike has been hauling the mail since we debut it and it just sucks to lose this way. The good thing is we have plenty of time to get things ready for Charlotte and we’re No. 1 going into the Countdown, which is what we wanted most.”
Smith will lead the Pro Stock Motorcycle field into the Countdown, which kicks off at the new Charlotte drag strip in two weeks.
