Smith and National Tire & Battery team return at the IHRA President's Cup

BUDDS CREEK, pre-race: Veteran drag racer Mike Smith and the National Tire & Battery Nitro Funny Car team will return to battle this weekend at the IHRA Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek.

This is second outing of the season for the NTB Funny Car. Smith drove the Paul Richards-owned Chevy Camaro to a stunning runner-up finish in his in nitro Funny Car competition debut earlier this season. After qualifying in the top half of the field and advancing to the final round in Epping, the National Tire & Battery team is hungry for a victory at Budds Creek.

'We want to thank National Tire & Battery President & CEO, Orland Wolord, for his tremendous inspiration and support," said Richards. "And I'd also like to thank Vice President of Marketing, Bob Crostarosa, for all of his help in our racing project."

The Paul Richards Racing team is also involved with The Science of Racing, a program which focuses on addressing the waning interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the United States .

"This is our way of helping to bring the message to fans, students, parents and teachers about the demand in the United States for scientist and engineers," said Richards. 'We try and teach how various scientific technologies and principles are used in all aspects of drag racing."

Evening thought the NTB Funny Car has been sitting idle, the team has been working constantly in the shop to improve performance. Smith has enjoyed the help of Dale Smith, Mike Harrigan, and Steve Gruenwald to help prepare the car for Budds Creek.

"We've been working on the National Tire & Battery car a lot since mid-August," Smith said. "We just want to go from A to B as quickly and safely as we can, qualify and win some rounds on Sunday."

The Florida-based Paul Richards Racing team includes Dave Richards, Paul Cambron, Ryan Scott, Dwayne Beers, Mike Roberts, driver and crew chief Mike Smith and car owner and team manager Paul Richards.
