After a five month absence from NHRA national event competition, Duane Shields returned for the 57th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA. “It feels good to be back after a long break and I want to thank our sponsors PEAK Antifreeze, NGK Spark Plugs and GRP Connecting Rods for their continued support in 2017” Duane said.

Duane qualified tenth with a 5.52 at 272 MPH and was paired up with Casey Grisel in the first round of eliminations. As the lights came down, Grisel was a fraction of a second too quick off the starting line and went red. Meanwhile, Duane was on a good run but still had to pedal on the way to the finish line. Duane posted a 5.40 at 275 MPH for his first round win of the 2017 season.

In round two, Duane was scheduled to race against Randy Eakins but in a rare occurrence Duane’s A/Fuel dragster was unable to start due to an error. “We’re a much better team than the results indicated and we’re disappointed the car did not start because our performance had improved on every pass. But keep in mind, it’s the beginning of the season and it’s only one race” Duane said.

Next, the team plans to do some testing prior to their first regional race in Phoenix at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park on March 3-5.
