Sensational Summernationals Day One Concludes With Records Aplenty

Saturday, 16 February 2008 - (Sydney, NSW) The 2008 Summernationals Day One qualifying will be a day etched in Drag Racing history for a long time to come as the big crowd on hand were treated to record quick fields in most Group One categories including Top Fuel, Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock in an epic.

Quite simply, one of the great days in Australian Motorsport History.

Tony Beuk, WSID Managing Director is very pleased with the way that the event turned out and says that the Summernationals has more than lived up to it's pre-event expectations so far, with the big action set to crank from 5pm today!

"Congratulations to all of the competitors and spectators that were able to make it to the event today. The management and staff here at WSID were confident that this event was going to be something special, but this is nothing compared to what was expected. Qualifying can be described in one word - AWESOME," remarked Tony Beuk, WSID Managing Director.

".and after what we have just seen, TODAY'S racing should be incredible!"

Pre-entries to the event were provided an excellent reception to the event. This was highlighted with huge numbers for Group One categories including 10 Top Fuel Dragsters.

At the end of the day the cut off to gain a starting position in tomorrow's Group One racing action was tough. This is how it looked at the end of Group One Professional Qualifying:

Top Fuel
The Nitro rocketships continue their surge in the sport with the category again producing the goods with the 5.165 bump spot again establishing the sport's quickest ever Top Fuel field.
Ironically, if Amanda's Shepherd's earlier 4.9 second pass had counted, it woul have reset the bump to Sainty's stout 5.005 run.

Phil Read once again recorded a 4.5 second pass, a 4.58, in order to take pole position in Top Fuel, while being closely followed by Darren Morgan who continues his Wicked Quick surge and Martin Stamatis - who both recorded 4.61's.

Top Doorslammer
Top Doorslammer was always threatening to shake WSID to its foundations and it delivered all that and more, with the quickest ever field, with the 8 car in qualifying (Maurice Fabietti) running a 6.171.

To add an incredible exclamation point on the Doorslammer action, local racer Deno Brijeski ran a 5.956 to nail top peg, and join an elite group of 5-second racers in the world have busted into the fives.

Pro Stock
Aaron and Tyronne Tremayne again played havoc with a cracking Pro Stock field, qualifying first and second with a 7.13 and 7.14 respectively, that bettered the current National record.
Once again the Pro Stock bump of a 7.294 ensured it was the quickest ever field in Drag Racing history.

Top Alcohol
Wayne Newby whooped the Funny Car drivers with the quickest and fastest pass ever produced by a Top Alcohol Dragster with a time of 5.57 seconds at 254mph.

Aaron Hambridge debuted a brand new Dragster to further serve notice to the established Funny Car stars.

Top Bike
Pole position went to kiwi Athol Williams with a time of 6.562 as both he and local rider Leonard Azzopardi served it up to the established Nitro Harley stars.

Pro Stock Bike
Top qualifier went to Peter Cochrane with a time of 7.16 seconds, however Callam Godeassi and Jason Lee still will have a big say during eliminations today!

Action resumes TODAY, right now for the final day of the 2008 Summernationals.

Perfect weather conditions, a new 'wall of sound PA system' in place and massive new Giant Video Screen - its ready to go ANDRA Championship Drag Racing TODAY at Western Sydney Dragway for the fifth annual Summernationals!
