ROCKINGHAM, NC. - Scott Cannon Jr., was representative of his drag racing pedigree by winning the IHRA Universal Technical Institute World Finals Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified title. The second-generation drag racer concluded his season on a bright note when he simply refused to quit after a season-opening mishap seriously stunted his championship hopes.
Cannon, who is sponsored by Evan Knoll - Torco Race Fuels, built momentum over the course of the weekend and maintained it when final eliminations were postponed until Monday morning. He was the quickest and fastest amongst the Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified entries despite a frigid track and blustery pre-winter conditions.
That's where the pedigree came into play.
"If there's a track that is tough to navigate and the conditions are the ugliest, that's where my Dad [a six-time Pro Modified world champion] is at his best," Junior said. "The conditions were there for fast racing in every session and throughout the first two rounds of eliminations. We had to go deep into the logbooks for something to throw at the track. It may not have been ugly first thing on Monday morning but it came around."
On a weekend where all class performance barriers fell, Cannon pedaled, shook and slid his way to the low elapsed time of Monday's semi-final round with a 6.537, 207.85 to take out Josh Hernandez, the newly christened record holder. This performance came after running a 6.109 (Tommy D'Aprile) and a 6.055 (Danny Rowe).
The final round left no doubt as Cannon laid down a 6.051, 226.16 to stop a fouling Raymond Commisso.
The Cannon team exhibited unparalleled prowess when they, along with the tireless crew at Vanishing Point Race Cars, rebuilt a mangled Pontiac GTO following a qualifying accident in San Antonio, Texas. With less than three weeks time, the Evan Knoll - Torco Race Fuels-sponsored team made it to Rockingham Dragway for the next event.
Rockingham Dragway has always held a special place in the heart of the Cannons. When Junior was just an elementary school student, Scotty made his national event debut as a Top Sportsman racer.
Ironically, Scotty qualified with a 7.777 at 177 miles per hour.
