Scruggs Records ADRL's Quickest, Fastest Run to Highlight First Day

VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 4, 2006) - Jason Scruggs, already the holder of both ends of the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League's Pro Extreme performance records, appears intent on establishing a new set of marks at this weekend's Camp Motorsport ADRL Georgia Drags.

Scruggs highlighted Friday's opening day of competition with a stunning 3.804 at 198.67 mph during the evening qualifying session, easily claiming the top spot on the Pro Extreme qualifying sheet and setting the stage for what could be a record-setting day Saturday. Scruggs' run was both the quickest and fastest ever recorded in ADRL competition.

Entering the Georgia Drags, the ADRL's Pro Extreme records were 3.813 at 198.44 mph, which Scruggs set at last year's Dragstock III event in Rockingham. With the ADRL using a one-percent-backup rule, Scruggs will need to post marks of at least 3.842 or 196.69 at some point on Saturday to set one or both ends of the Pro Extreme record. Each half of the record is worth a 50-point bonus in the AlphaTrade Battle for the Belts points competition.

After Friday's lone qualifying run, Scruggs leads the Pro Extreme field by a full .15-second, an almost unheard-of margin, especially for eighth-mile drag racing. Travis Swearingen grabbed the No. 2 spot Friday with a 3.95; he was followed by Tommy D'Aprile (3.96), and Bryan Dyar and Houston winner Mike Bell (both 3.97). In all, seven Pro Extreme drivers got under the 4-second barrier.

In other action Friday night, Mike Castellana powered to a 4.043 to lead a solid Pro Nitrous field, which featured 14 runs better than 4.1 seconds. Steve Vick (4.047), and Burton Auxier and Houston winner Charles Carpenter (both 4.057) are Castellana's closest pursuers heading into Saturday's competition. The provisional bump time of 4.127, currently held by Thomas Myers, already makes the Georgia Drags field the second-quickest in ADRL Pro Nitrous history.

In Extreme 10.5, Todd Tutterow continued to prove his versatility as a driver of fast doorslammers, recording a 4.35 to lead first-day qualifying. Tutterow has previously won eliminations rounds in both the Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous classes (he is also entered in Pro Extreme at this weekend's Georgia Drags). Rodney Rosenstiel, the winner of the first-ever ADRL Extreme 10.5 event earlier this season in Houston, wound up No. 2 with a 4.39.

Drivers in all of the ADRL's professional classes will have two more qualifying attempts Saturday (noon and 2 p.m.) to reach their respective eliminations fields at the Camp Motorsport Georgia Drags. Eliminations in all classes are scheduled for Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
