SCELZI'S STEADY IN VEGAS, GRABS NO. 3 IN QUALIFYING

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 27, 2007) - Gary Scelzi, No. 2 in Countdown to One point standings in the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, with two events remaining in the season, beginning with this weekend's ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals, collected No. 3 in Funny Car qualifying today at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Piloting the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T for Don Schumacher Racing, Scelzi recorded his quickest pass of the weekend, a 4.775-second lap at 320.81 mph, in the final qualifying round, the quickest run of that session.

Scelzi's other passes were strong, steady and consistent: 4.856/318.54, 4.815/322.11, and a 4.799/324.67.

"Well, so far so good," said Scelzi, who faces Cruz Pedregon (not in the Countdown) in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday. "Pretty consistent race car. We know what happens when we have consistent race cars: you do well and you win races. So, tomorrow is going to be war. But, I like the armor we're taking in there with us, and I like the gun we're shooting with.

"The Mopar/Oakley Dodge is getting closer to giving Todd (Okuhara, crew chief, along with Phil Shuler) what he wants. It's still not quite there, but we've got something we can race and we can race fast. So, I guess all I can say is 'bring it on.'

Scelzi is on the same side of the ladder as two of his Countdown competitors: No. 4 in points Ron Capps (qualified No. 6) and No. 1 Tony Pedregon (qualified No. 2). "We're going to have to race somebody some time, and Cruz Pedregon is not exactly 'easy pickins.' Whatever, whenever, however; let's just go get it done."
