LAS VEGAS (Nov. 1, 2008) - Gary Scelzi qualified the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in No. 10 for the eighth annual Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the penultimate round of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
His quickest lap of 4.093 seconds at 301.94 mph was set Friday evening, good for No. 6 at the time, which followed a tire-smoking 7.127/89.84 earlier in the day. Today's passes included a 5.387/126.79 (No. 7), and finally a 4.125/298.67 under a cloudy sky.
"We had a good day yesterday with qualifying," said Scelzi. "We were No. 6, which is the highest we have been all year.
"We got after it today, but it just has not responded. I think we're going to make an engine change. For whatever reason this Mopar/Oakley Dodge seems to be down on power. Don't know why, maybe it's the supercharger, or maybe it's something else.
"Actually, we're going to change everything, and put a new kitchen sink in it. We're going against Melanie Troxel in the opening round. We'll throw everything at her and see if we can't get a win here in Vegas." Scelzi’s solo victory at The Strip was in 2004, against John Force.
