The brand new S&S Racing Pro Stock Buell made a sensational Championship debut in the Pro Stock Bike bracket at the East Coast Nationals in Sydney last weekend (September 1-2).
The Brett Stevens Racing prepared bike launched into the opening round of the Australian Drag Racing Championship with new team rider Dion Prowse at the handle bars and went straight to the number 2 position after qualifying.
After making his way to the Final of his first ever Championship event, Prowse then surprised all by taking out the title by just 6 thousandths of a second after out reacting his opponent on the start line.
“I knew I had to nail the light and I think there were only centimetres in it at the finish line,” Prowse said.
“This is my first ever Championship Drag Racing event so to take home the winners trophy in a professional bracket is just amazing.”
“We have really started to get our heads around the S&S powered Buell and it is only going to get better.”
“I would really like to thank Brett Stevens and S&S for giving me this chance and I hope it is the start of many more to come.”
Troy McLean also saw some success for the team when he took his Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley to semi finals before being eliminated by reigning Champion Jay Upton.
From the number four qualifying spot, McLean went past New Zealander Athol Williams in the quarter finals but despite laying down his quickest time for the event of 6.65 seconds in the semis, it was no match for Upton ’s 6.26.
“I had some real problems during qualifying and struggled to get the bike down the track with its usual consistency,” McLean said.
“We changed a few things in the clutch and we finally ran a 6 (second pass), but unfortunately Jay ( Upton ) was really on his game this weekend and it wasn’t enough.”
“Hopefully we can get one back on him at the Australian Nationals at Willowbank in two weeks time.”
The Brett Stevens Racing ‘Super Teams’ other competing entries, the Jack Daniel’s Racing Top Doorslammer driven by Kath Stevens and the Glenfords Racing Top Doorslammer with Steve Packman at the wheel, had a mixed weekend due to a variety of mechanical failures.
Kath was particularly unlucky in her runs with her 3000 horsepower Falcon, suffering a blackened crank, broken blower belt and broken gearbox sprag over the two days putting an end to her high expectations coming into the event.
Packman was initially on track for a good event when he set a personal best time on his first qualifier, but was also plagued with mechanical problems over the two days.
Packman’s Glenfords Racing Top Doorslammer however did take home the “Best Engineered Vehicle” for the event, which honours the most outstandingly constructed vehicle.
The Brett Stevens Racing team will now travel to Queensland ’s Willowbank Raceway to contest the Australian Drag Racing Nationals from September 16-17.
