Ryan's Ramblings - Reviewing The 2008 Summernationals

Sunday, 9 March 2008 - (Sydney, NSW) For those who don't know - Ryan Corfield is one madly passionate fan of Drag Racing and has assisted when and where he can with some PR work. 'Ryno' is a young man with more than his fair share of health curve-balls, but this bright spark just felt compelled to talk about his recollections of the recent Summernationals event at Western Sydney Dragway.

Hi, my name is Ryan Corfield and I am one of the guys that work in the office at WSID from time to time. I'm only 19 years of age and have been around Motorsport all my life, with my father, Gary being a former Drag Racer now Sprintcar team owner. Over the years I have attended many events both Drag Racing and Speedway and I firmly believe that none of the events that I have attended can match the quality of the 2008 Summernationals.

I knew that the Summernationals was going to be an awesome event before driving through the pit gates on Friday morning, I knew it was going to be something special when I first seen the finalised entry list with 19 Doorslammers on the entry list as well as 10 Top Fuel Dragsters, something that hadn't been seen before in this country. In the last five years, Drag Racing has really showed huge potential and this has been possible due to the resurrection of Championship Drag Racing in Sydney at a world class facility. This is the most important ingredient in the recipe. In simple terms Drag Racing needed Sydney as Sydney is where the majority of teams are based.

I can remember looking at entry lists at the turn of the century and seeing only three Fuel Cars entering for Willowbank events, and this last weekend we see 10. Not only are the kings of the sport stronger than ever, Drag Racing as a whole is stronger than ever.

The past few years, the Summernationals has been contested in scorching temperatures or has been rained out (which was the case in 2005 - the second running of the event), but yet this year we were presented with perfect Drag Racing conditions and the on track performances definitely signify that team's took this to their advantage.

Top Fuel, Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock all lived up to their expectations, pardon me better than expected. Where do I start where do I finish??? How good was it to see Sydneysider Maurice Fabietti get his first elusive Doorslammer National event after many years of working towards the feat and I guarantee that when Maurice got out of bed Saturday morning he didn't think it was going to be him holding the golden ANDRA Christmas tree knowing that he had to race number one qualified Deno Brijeski who recorded his fist 5 second pass during Friday night qualifying. Maurice then did it again to defeat the most dominant man in Australian Top Doorslammer racing. Maurice is as close as he can to recording that illusive five second pass, with a PB time of 6.000. Maurice you had a Fabulous!!! Race day on Saturday. Congratulations mate. I look forward to seeing what transpires in Perth in two weeks!

Six five second passes in the one event, three of them being recorded by drivers that had not been in five second territory before (Deno and Kath Stevens).

Magic, just magic. you better believe it!!! Kath comes out of nowhere and smacks a 5.96 up on the boards, oh and by the way on her Birthday! Happy Birthday once again Kath. I know Brett's happy and I don't blame him, I can't believe that he is happy about the fact that someone has gone quicker than he ever has in his career, but he's got every right to be. Having said that, I guarantee that seeing you run that five would have been just as good as winning the championship in any of the three categories that he contests (Top Doorslammer, Top Alcohol and Top Bike).

Brett, congratulations on your first round efforts, the fastest Alcohol pass in Australia - 263.15mph as well as your win in Alcohol and Top Bike. I trust that the five second pass isn't all that far away for you.

To see seven out of the ten Top Fuel cars run four second passes on the weekend is astonishing. The Jim Read Racing team once again hit the 4.50's with both cars. Phil and Martin running a 4.58 and 4.57 respectively. Top Fuel was very competitive this weekend with many side by side four second asses, particularly Darren [Morgan] running 4.61 Friday night and then having the incremental on more than two other runs to be able to run quicker if they had have recorded full track passes. Darren is definitely 'Wicked Quick'.

Congratulations to Martin Stamatis and team headed by Rob Cavagnino for running a 4.57 and taking the win. You guys deserved this and I know how much this means to you Rob.

Pro Stock was very fiercely contested throughout the weekend with a bump spot of 7.29. I can't believe that it was only two years ago that Jon Andriopoulos recorded the first 7.2 second pass, a 7.28 and now that would have out you down the bottom half of the field.

Well done to the Tremayniacs for their stout performances over the weekend. The cars are brand new, second show out winning races and setting National records. The new Wally Stroupe, TRE combinations are awesome. I'm sure there's plenty more to come.

Well done to all teams that contested this magnificent event. In closing, I congratulate you all in taking part in the best Drag Racing event that Australia has ever seen and I look forward to seeing you on the strip soon.

We couldn't help but agree Ryan!
