(4-25-2008) ATLANTA, GA – Danny Rowe drove the Hottinger Group ’67 Chevy Camaro to the No. 2 qualifying spot on Friday at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, posting his first-ever five-second pass at 5.993 seconds at 236.09 mph during Friday’s second qualifying session.
His first qualifying effort for the day fashioned a 6.008/240.34, also enough for the No. 2 position at the time.
“This is something we’ve been after for quite awhile,” said Rowe after the run. “The conditions came in nicely here this evening and even though our runs were prolonged a little longer than we had originally planned on, it seems to have been for the best. The track surface here today is fantastic, the NHRA track prep crew has done a great job and I knew that if the conditions were right our own Jimmy Rector [crew chief] would be able to swing for the fences.”
“Ultimately, we’re striving to have a consistently quick and fast race car,” said Rowe, who was paired up against former teammate Mike Ashley in the second round of qualifying in Atlanta. “We were the second to last set of cars to run and we’d seen our 2nd team car driven by Kirk Kuhns go a 6.04, letting us know that we might be able to break into that elusive 5-second zone. While this career-best run doesn’t equate into points, it’s a huge confidence builder for everyone on the team. We couldn’t be happier.”
One more qualifying round is scheduled for Saturday to set the 16-car field for eliminations.
