(September 4, 2020) – Ron Capps, the most recent winner on the NHRA tour, powered his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car to a 3.895 E.T. at a top speed of 330.63 mph to pace the provisional Funny Car field at the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals during the first ‘Friday Night Lights’ event of the 2020 season. Capps, who earned his first Indianapolis win at the famed facility three weeks ago, is eager for a repeat on Sunday to collect his first U.S. Nationals Wally trophy. Capps’ 3.895-second pass was clocked during Friday’s sole qualifying session which was contested two hours later than originally scheduled due to a series of lengthy on-track delays. “The guys go up there planning to run a certain number, and then we have a two-hour delay and the weather changes, and the track conditions are so different from what they were when we were supposed to run, but that’s why I always brag about (my crew chief) Rahn Tobler, he’s great at making changes on the fly like that,” explained Capps of the Q1 run that placed him at the top of the Funny Car ladder. “My car, it was a handful, it was moving around a lot, but it made down under power, so great job by the NAPA guys.” With two qualifying runs scheduled for Saturday, Capps’ competitors will be looking to knock him from the top spot, but with significantly different conditions in store, accomplishing that will be a tall order. If Capps’ 3.895 E.T. holds up to be the quickest of qualifying, he will start from the pole on race day for the 25th time of his career.
