Right Lane Bites Smith at Englishtown

Matt Smith and his Nitrofish Buell went into Old Bridge Township Raceway Park with hopes of running well this past weekend. Smith put down great numbers during qualifying in both Friday and Saturday’s sessions. With his quickest time being a 6.952 et at 191.38 mph, Smith would qualify himself in the third position going into raceday on Sunday.

Having to face off against Wesley Wells first round, Smith knew he would have to cut a good light and run a great number. Not having any shifting problems with his bike all weekend, Smith hoped that streak would continue into raceday. Cutting a good light and running the second quickest time of the round, Smith would sail into the next round.

Now having to run against Craig Treble, Smith knew that his bike would run the numbers but he would have to be stellar on the tree against Treble. Leaving on the race veteran and never looking back, Smith would make his way into the semi-finals.

With Smith having lane choice the two previous rounds, thus choosing the left lane, Smith would lose lane choice against Chip Ellis and would now be forced to run in the right lane.

Doing all he could on the tree, Smith would cut a .009 light, however the right lane would prove to be no match for the left lane as Ellis would cruise to victory over Smith.

“We had a good weekend,” said Smith. “We think we figured out some of the glitches with this Nitrofish Buell and we are happy with how things turned out. It was all about lane choice today for some reason. No one could run the numbers in that right lane. I have no idea why, but you look at the runs all day in that lane and no one made a good pass. I am happy for Chip though; he deserves it. He is a great guy and I am glad to see him win.”

Smith sits third in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle Championship point standings heading into Norwalk, Ohio this weekend
