Rickie Smith Shows his Strength at the Farm

King, North Carolina’s very own, “Tricky” Rickie Smith had fans going crazy this past weekend at Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC. Don Plemmons’ Quick 8 Racers Association started their 2008 season off with a bang.

Smith tested at the track on Friday and put down a streak of incredible three second passes lap after lap. As things got underway on Saturday, Smith showed no mercy as he once again put down outstanding numbers. Smith’s 3.959 second pass in the second qualifying session would qualify him in the No. 1 spot going into that night’s race.

In round one, Smith would take out Buzz Varner with another amazing pass. Running a 3.961 second pass, Smith would sail into the next round, this time having to face Steve Vick. Posting yet another three second pass (3.95 seconds) Smith would advance his way into the finals.

Having to run Jim Halsey in the final round, Smith would go in as the favorite. As he had been unloading three second passes like they were going out of style all day. Cutting a .039 light to Halsey’s .049, Smith would get the jump off the line, however Halsey would run just slightly quicker than Smith and take the win as the two would record the first three second side-by-side pass ever at the Farm (Halsey’s 3.95 to Smith’s 3.97).

“That was awesome,” said Smith. “I knew Charlie (Buck) had found some power, but wow is all I can say. We ran great all day and I am very happy with this weekend. I would have liked to win it, but running the first three second side-by-side pass here at the Farm was something I will never forget either. It was a great race and I can’t say enough about the people that have helped me out this year. Bailey Trucking, CAPCO Contractors and Carolina Drilling have stepped up to help me out and I’m sure their proud of us this weekend.”

When the track is hot and under normal conditions, no one in the country can hang with Smith on the racetrack and he has proved it time and time again. Smith admits to detuning during certain sessions on Saturday with his three second elapse times. Without bragging the veteran stated that he was being conservative to just try and win the race.

“I know we could have run faster in the finals,” said Smith. “I mean, in the heat during the day we were putting down 3.95 passes and when it cooled down I could have easily ran a 3.93, but I was just being conservative. Halsey’s and his crew did a great job and they stepped up when the time was right, so congratulations to their whole team.”

Smith leaves Farmington Dragway with the track record at a 3.952 e.t.

Smith will run his Nitrous Injected Pro Modified car again the first weekend in April at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn.
