Huntsville, Ala. (June 2, 2007) — It has a night for repeat performances and for Pro Extreme record-holder Jason Scruggs as the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League's AMS Staff Leasing Summer Drags concluded Saturday at Huntsville Dragway.
Johnny Pilcher (Pro Nitrous) and Mike Hill (Extreme 10.5) won their second consecutive ADRL national events Saturday night, Jack Young won in Pro Extreme Motorcycle over repeat finalist Coodee Thomas, and Scruggs electrified the crowd all day with a series of stunning runs en route to his first career ADRL title.
Pilcher increased his AlphaTrade Battle for the Belts points lead by backing up his win last month from the Georgia Drags. After qualifying No. 5 with a 4.11 best, he ran a 4.09-4.07-4.13 sequence to reach the final, where he met first-time finalist Jamie Hancock in what turned out to be a weird race. In a scene that resembled something that might be found in a quarter-mile Funny Car final, Pilcher and Hancock engaged in a pedaling battle as both drivers desperately sought to hook up with the track. It was Pilcher who got it done first, scoring a 5.03 to 5.13 win.
Hill was a force all weekend in Extreme 10.5, qualifying No. 1 with a 4.38 best — six-hundredths clear of the rest of the field — and then posting back-to-back 4.37s to reach the final. His 4.40 there was just enough to get past Steve Gorman's 4.42.
Scruggs, the holder of both ends of the ADRL's Pro Extreme performance records, just had too much car for the rest of the field. He qualified No. 1 with a 3.859, leading a total of three drivers into the 3.8-second zone (Quain Stott was No. 2 with a 3.883; Troy Critchley was third with a 3.894). In eliminations, Scruggs was merciless, opening with a 3.916 to oust Bryan Dyar, running a 3.893 to beat Michael Neal, and outrunning Bennie McDonald Jr. in a fantastic side-by-side semifinal, 3.902 to 3.953. In the final, Bubba Stanton did everything he could, posting a 3.988, but Scruggs again found the 3.8-second level with a killer 3.896.
Thomas reached his second straight Pro Extreme Motorcycle final, but the result was the same as the first. This time, his bike never really got going, and he coasted to a 10-second e.t. while Young put together a 4.46 that was more than good enough to win.
Young won out of the No. 3 spot in what turned out to be a deep PEMX field. After a number of riders made their event debuts Saturday, the field swelled to 22 entries.
The Summer Drags were the fourth of eight events on the 2007 ADRL schedule. The series next moves to Radford, Va., for the inaugural ADRL Independence Drags on July 6 and 7.
