Reichert closes championship season with Pomona win

POMONA, Calif. - Newly crowned NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Bill Reichert closed a dream season in style by winning this past weekend's Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. On Monday, Reichert and the Rislone Engine Treatment/Bar's Leaks team were honored at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Banquet at the Westin Mission Hills Resort near Palm Springs, Calif.

Reichert, from Owosso, Mich., qualified his injected-nitro dragster second in the field with a 5.265 second pass at 274.00 mph right out of the trailer. In round one, he defeated Joey Severance with a 5.273 at 273.4 mph, then took out Jim Whitely in round two with a 5.319 at 259.71 mph. In the semifinals, he took out a tire-smoking Brandon Pierce with a 5.353 at 273.88mph.

Reichert's final round opponent would be rookie standout Spencer Massey.
Massey redlighted by .001 of a second to hand the automatic win to Reichert, who streaked toa 5.262 at 274.39 mph to close his championship season in style.

"It definitely was a great way to end the season," said Reichert. "We had slipped a little bit at the last two races, so it was good to go to the last race and pick back up where we had left off."

"It also gives us some momentum heading into the offseason," Reichert added. "It gives you the enthusiasm to go out there and work on the car during the winter. It can be a long winter if you end the season on a down note, like being late, or if the car didn't run well. This winter, we'll get to paint the No. 1 on the wing and know we ran very well on the last run. I cut a good light, and even though Spencer redlighted, it would have been a very close race. Being honored at the banquet on Monday was just a heck of a way to end a great trip."

Reichert has no plans for change on his championship winning racecar, but will race out of a new trailer next season.

"We're not going to do anything major to the car, just freshen a few things up," said Reichert. "The majority of our time is going to be spent converting to our new trailer we bought. Our goal is to have everything ready to go by next year's Gatornationals in Gainesville."
