Not to worry, this is not a commentary on the countdown........

I noticed in the JFR release that they called Neff the 2011 Regular season champ. I didn't not realize that this was a distinction that was being made.
I assume it is meant more for marketing fluff and resume padding but who knows. The race banners in stadiums for division/conference championships so I guess this would be similar

Have others been going by this as well and I just missed it?

It makes perfect sense to me. Why not? A driver should be given recognition if they led the season and messed up the countdown.

that popped out at me when I read that press release too...

it is just marketing spin, but not a bad way put how the season turned out for the team

I caught that too & it took a second to figure it out.

I seriously doubt that Zippy had anything to do with the statement!!!

Brian: thanks man; I really needed a good laugh!!! :D :D :D

I guess it is not unlike other sports that have divisional/conference champions in the regular season. There could be a marketing idea in there that could work for drag racing ... and as usual Force is out in front of everyone else with the idea.

Caught that also. Points up the phoniness of thE countdown. When teams will not accept its validity. ( except when THEY win the "championship")

There are still drivers that are bitter of it, but they know the rules and that's what they agreed to. (well agreed to by still being in the sport) I know Capps has never been a fan, he's also a racer that's been burned by it the most. You bring a good point and it makes me wonder, I see Del having a great year no matter what and I wish him the best, but if he lost the title due to the countdown would he of still retired?

Exactly! This is just a dumb claim by JFR to something that doesn't exist.

Not hardly, it makes alot of sense. How can you say it does not exist? It did not exist until John Force brought it to life, so saying it does not exist is like saying gravity isn't real. It's a great way to sell a team to a sponsor, I don't think that point was invented for the fans. I could picture a deal getting closer to being signed by saying, "We led the points 16 races and dominated, during the 6 race countdown we slipped to 5th." instead of saying, "We finished 5th after 22 races." Yea, us fans knows it's a little exaggerated; but in the end it's all about the sales pitch and a great one it is as how it gives a dissapointing 5th place season (no matter how close the chase was) a really beautiful story.

Show me anything official by the NHRA mentioning a regular season championship. Like I said, it doesn't exist. He may have been the points leader, but he was no champion. The only champion is the one they crown at the end of the season.

This is not about NHRA Official, A team is aloud to say whatever it wants.

1. It looks good for sponsors (existing and potential)
2. It's nothing but truth. Fabricated? Of course because it does not look at the whole picture, but a lie? Nope
3. If they want to state that they were # 1 when the non countdown season ended more power to them.

It does not matter if it's an officially backed statement by the NHRA. The # 1 point is that it's A GIGANTIC selling point and as long as it's not a lie, it can be said and JFR is gonna run with it. I bet this starts happening because no team is gonna be breaking any rules if they want to highlight what really did happen. Everyone figures it out that all it means is they did not deliver, but again, it looks good on paper and the worst it can do is gain a sponsor or two, it's not gonna lose any.

How else do you highlight a 5th place finish? I think it's a better sell saying this than just saying we lost by 100 points. It's really no different than football. The Eagles won the NFC East last season, they lost rd.1 of the Playoffs last year. Did they say, "We won the playoffs and lost." or did they say "2010 NFC East Champions!"?
