ATLANTA (April 24) -- Fresh off his second consecutive No. 1 qualifying effort and his first final-round appearances of the 2007 season, two-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin is anxious to get behind the wheel of his Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevrolet Cobalt and keep his hot streak alive.
The 47-time national event winner, along with Dave Connolly, his teammate on Victor Cagnazzi's race team, and the rest of the top Pro Stock drivers in the country, will get their chance to rev-up their engines this weekend at the 27th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
"Atlanta couldn't come soon enough for me," Coughlin said. "We certainly are expecting another good showing with the way this car has been running. We feel as though we're building some nice momentum on this race team.
"It was great to be No. 1 in Houston and then to come back and do it again in Vegas with Dave right behind us in second was really something. We have confidence in our cars and in the setups we're utilizing at the moment, and I feel a rising confidence behind the wheel. That all leads up to where we are now, challenging for race wins."
It's going to be a busy extended weekend for Coughlin as the likable racer from Delaware, Ohio, arrives Thursday for Coca-Cola's annual Evening of Champions, saluting all of the POWERade champions from previous years.
"This is a really neat deal that Coca-Cola has put together for those of us lucky enough to have won POWERade championships," Coughlin said. "It dates back to 2002, and my PR guy Woody [Woodruff] tells me I was actually the very first POWERade champion because I clinched the title that year sooner than anyone else. It's a real honor to be invited and I'm proud to be representing JEGS and Slammers there."
Coughlin is a two-time winner at Atlanta Dragway. He won the Pro Stock title here in his first championship year of 2000, beating veteran Bruce Allen in the final. He also won his first national event in Competition Eliminator here in 1997.
"That track always seems to suit what we're trying to do," Coughlin said. "Atlanta Dragway has a nice, smooth surface so you can really race down that track and the weather tends to be warm and humid, which is just fine by us. I can't wait to get started."
