Records Fall at NHRA Cavalcade of Stars at Summit Motorsports Park , Norwalk Ohio

Norwalk, Ohio, May 20, 2007 -- The inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser and the Ohio Lottery is now in the history books, along with several drag racing records. Drivers earned their share of cash and contingency awards worth more than $200,000 at the event which was the first NHRA Division 3 race of the season.

Defending Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster champion and number one qualifier Bill Reichert of Owosso , Mich. , defeated Dave Hedges Jr. of Plainwell, Mich. , with a pass of 5.268 seconds at 275.73 mph. Hedges came off the line a tenth of a second quicker but Reichert came from behind to beat Hedges to the finish line by two tenths. Reichert also set a track record for speed in that final round victory. Reichert also set the track elapsed time track record of 5.256 seconds in the semifinal round. This was Reichert’s second win this season, following a victory at the O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston earlier this year.

Defending Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Frank Manzo of Morganville , N.J. , who was also number one qualifier, defeated Daniel Wilkerson of Springfield , Ill. , with a pass of 5.540 seconds at 260.61 mph. That final round also produced new track records for both speed and ET. Manzo drilled the 19-year-old Wilkerson off the starting line for an easy victory. This marked Manzo’s second win this season following a victory at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta .

In Competition Eliminator, Jeff Taylor of Floyds Kobb, Ind. , defeated Robert Bailey of Wabash Ind. , with a pass of 8.835 seconds at 137.26 mph. In Saturday’s Competition Eliminator qualifying Bob Book of Frankfort , Ill. , shattered the A/Dragster record with a pass of 6.383 seconds at 211.10 mph. The old record was 6.55 seconds at 206.64 mph.

In Super Stock, Todd Frantz, Louisville , Ky. , bested Joe Bohannon, Sheperdsville Ky. , when Bohannon fouled on a red light. In Saturday’s qualifying, Dave Layer of Dayton , Ohio moved the SS/KA national record from 10.22 seconds to 10.12 seconds.

In Top Sportsman, it was the quickest field in NHRA Division 3 history. Earning the victory was Ricky Adkins, Milan , Mich. , with pass of 7.124 seconds at 184.98 mph over Howard Michael of Newport , Mich. Also winning this weekend was Top Dragster racer John Maggiulli Jr. of Chester , N.J., who had a pass of 7.315 seconds at 167.45 mph to earn the win over Top Sportsman winner Adkins.

In all other categories, Super Street driver Chris Balcom of Cincinnati, defeated Bud Gilbert of Port Huron , Mich.; Super Gas racer Tim Schmidt of Massillon, Ohio, beat Corinne MacMillan from Ajax, Ont.; In Super Comp Dennis Rutherford of Newark , Ohio , beat Bill Webb of Centerburg , Ohio , with a pass of 8.883 seconds. Pro Stock Snowmobile driver Ron Bray of Anoka , Minn. , beat number one qualifier Edwin Wirbel of Midland , Mich. , with a pass of 8.824 seconds.
