Qualifying begins at JEGS Pacific Sportsnationals

FONTANA, Calif. (Oct 5) – Qualifying began today for the second annual JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals, held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif. Several hundred amateur drag racers from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are competing in eight separate eliminators.

After one round of qualifying in Comp Eliminator, David Beckley and Tom Huggins are ranked first and second, respectively. Beckley, the defending Pacific SPORTSnationals champion who hails from Wildomar, Calif., is the top qualifier with a 6.55 elapsed time in his ’63 Corvette. Huggins, of Santa Paula, Calif., turned in a run of 7.07-seconds in his ’06 GTO, which is good for the No. 2 spot.

In the Top Dragster class, Paul Gladden of Tracy, Calif., is the top qualifier with a 6.73-second run in his dragster. The top ten drivers in the 44-car field have run quicker than 8.00-seconds.

The Top Sportsman field is currently being led by Frank Tamez of Yakima, Wash., who drove his ’07 Mustang to a 6.87 elapsed time at 201.76 miles per hour. Tamez is currently the only qualifier in the field to run in the sixes or over 200 mph.

Brian McClanahan of Alta Loma, Calif., is the top qualifier in Super Stock and Mark Yacavone of Glendale, Ariz., is the current qualifying leader in Stock Eliminator. Competitors in Stock Eliminator also held their class eliminations today.

The highlight of Saturday’s action will be the Mopar Super Stock Hemi Challenge, a special event for 1960s Dodge and Plymouth factory race cars, which compete in the SS/AH class. One of the drivers who will be competing for the $5,000 top prize is defending event champion Rick Houser of Pasadena, Calif. Houser, who also won the Hemi Challenge title at the recent Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, is currently the top qualifier with an 8.751 elapsed time. The Mopar Hemi Challenge will be held during Super Stock class eliminations which are scheduled for Saturday at noon.

Saturday’s activities will also include a “cacklefest” where numerous nitromethane fueled nostalgia drag race vehicles started simultaneously. Final eliminations for the second annual JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals will begin Sunday, Oct. 7 at 8 a.m.
