I've been an Electrician for 33 years now and I've had friends burned severely by arc flash. It makes a funny car fire seem rather minor.

Not speculating on what caused this man's accident (by any means) but arc flash is most likely the cause. It's almost always 3rd degree burns on any unprotected part of one's body. Simple cotton clothing will protect you well in normal utilization voltage equipment. Any poly/ synthetic clothing will go up like a pile of dry straw.

Racers wear fire suits when piloting a race car. We wear arc flash suits when working in or around live gear for the same reason. If this man had a proper arc flash suit, helmet and gloves he would have likely walked away unscathed.

I hope and pray he has a complete recovery and all those around him learn a valuable lesson in arc flash safety.
