BRISTOL, Tenn. (July 7, 2007) – Rod Fuller qualified for this 50th consecutive NHRA race Saturday afternoon at Bristol Dragway. The current NHRA Top Fuel points leader qualified his all-white David Powers-owned dragster in the No. 4 position with a 4.592-second elapsed time.
Entering the Bristol race with a 98-point lead over Larry Dixon, Fuller used Rob Flynn horsepower to card the fourth quickest pass of the weekend. It came on Friday evening, when he drove his plain white car to a pass of 4.592 seconds at 326.95 mph. Fuller made two 4.59-second passes on Friday. The four-time Top Fuel winner covered the Bristol drag strip in 4.665 at 317.57 on Saturday’s first qualifying attempt. His rail overpowered the track on its final qualifying effort. Fuller will compete in his 115th round of Top Fuel eliminations during Sunday’s first round as he looks to advance to the final round at Bristol Dragway for the third straight year.
“I’m glad I’m not qualified No. 1,” Fuller said. “Nobody has won from the No. 1 spot. I think the car ran good in qualifying. We made three solid runs. We were trying some stuff on the fourth run. We just overpowered the track and we can back it down. We think we can run just as low as anybody and we’re ready for eliminations. We’ve got a tough draw. Those guys are tough. There all tough in Top Fuel racing. We’ll do our best to get back to the final for the third time here at Bristol .”
Fuller will face off against No. 13 qualifier Clay Millican in the first round of eliminations at Noon (ET) on Sunday. Fuller is 4-2 in his career against the Tennessee racer. ESPN will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage at 9:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday evening.
