So, what's on your list? If you have an SLR what would you add to it?

I've got a Nikon D70 that I've had for almost 3 years. I'd like to upgrade to the D200 but if money was no object it would be a D2Xs.

I'd also like these lenses:
Nikon 10.5mm
Nikon 12 - 24mm
Nikon 24 - 85mm f2.8
Nikon 50mm f1.4
Nikon 300mm
Nikon 400mm
Nikon 18 - 200mm VR
Nikon 80 - 400mm VR
Tamron 90mm

I've got plenty of memory cards, a decent tripod, etc. so I'm happy with what I already have.

I have a Canon 20D. Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 lens. Bogen monopod with the pistol grip ball head.

I'd like to add a 2.8 17-55mm and a 1.8 85mm and a 580ex.

I have:

Canon Rebel XT
Canon 18-55 f3.5-5.6
Canon 50 f1.8
Sigma 70-300 3.5-5.6
Canon 300 f/4 L IS <---- my baby!
4 gb Microdrive

I want:

Canon 100-400 <-----my 2nd purchase
Canon Fish-eye EF 15mmf/2.8
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
Canon EF 1.4x II Extender<--- my next purchase

I must be a simpleton to the rest of you, I have a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 18-200m F3.5 and a Tokina 28-300m F3.8. That's the stint of my Digital Inventory. I would like to try a Sigma 50-500m lense, anyone try it?

How's the image quality from that lens (the sigma)? Because a lot of people on the various discussion forums I visit say that lens is pretty soft at 2.8.

I love it. No issues at all. I shoot a lot of pictures in dimly lit hockey rinks, and I get great performance out of that lens. A couple of weeks ago, I was in the rink taking shots, and the guy from Hockey Weekly was there shooting. He helped me tweak the setup, and he was extremely impressed with pictures. We downloaded them and they were every bit as good as the pics he was taking with the Canon lens. He was also using a 20D.

That's like matching a $5,000 Alienware with a $100 bargin-basement monitor (sorry Joe, couldn't resist!).

You need to get a lens like the 17-55DX and 70-200ED VR! :p

BTW, as far as the 50-500 (aka the "bigma"): I have never handled it, but the people who have said it's great but requires very steady hands, due to the F6.3 at the long end.

I bet those lense's are Ex$pen$ive! Any F2.8 lense is gonna knock you on your Financial ass. Plus I like changing Lenses as Little as Possible, and I bet Nobody could tell what Lenses I use on my pics anyway.

If your shooting races you dont need anything more than a 70-200, gives you decnt pic's and will reach quite a ways down track. A nice 10-22 or equivelent would be nice for the pit stuff. I have a tamron 28-105 2.8 I have literally worn out and that is a good lense also $1000 but not near the quality of a canon, I just got my 70-200 2.8 canon and love it $1059, had to get one after renting one a few times to try it out. All these other spendy lenses you guys want have limited usage, I'd love to have a 300 2.8 But how much will you use it for $3500-5000. Cards are cheap A 1 gig card will give roughly 500 pic's on the large setting so you can get by with just a couple. My 30d has 5500-6000 shots already and has been flawless. Always buy the best you can afford, the sigma stuff is cheap but you get what you pay for in the long run, cheap equipment just isnt worth it. You dont have to buy new either find a good shop and bug the hell out of them, they will help you out. I buy most of my stuff through B&H photo, great prices and excellent service they sell used stuff also.

If I shot the number of Images Roger Richards or Dave Kommel took over the Course of a season I'd invest in some Nikkor Lenses. Afterall those lenses are metal versus plastic, I suppose I could try to rent a Nice lense from our local Newspaper. But I wouldn't want to lug that stuff around in a gadget bag all day at the track. I enjoy the adult beverages to much to want to chance it if you know what I mean! I'm a fan first, Photog second.

You won't believe how many average consumers on the dpreview.com forums buy those expensive lenses "because it will net me better pictures." It's like giving a man who drives a Cavalier a Z06 and expecting him to become a better driver.

Actually, there are some sigma lenses that are excellent from what I hear. The 30mm F/1.4 EX is widely regarded to be one of the best "normal" prime lenses for the Canon mount.

I think the main issue with Sigma is inconsistent quality control at the factory, causing something called "sample variation." In other words, one person may have a copy that's super sharp out of the box while another person may get a copy that's too soft. People have said that sigma has tightened that up but I still believe it happens.

I think I own my dream set-up
EOS 1-D mark II
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
580 EX
and various other stuff
My back-up set- up is rock solid
Three K-1000's with 26, 28, 52, 70-210, 80-300 etc.

you are right on the nuts buddy. A man doesnt need much more than that unless he's gonna do some wildlife stuff, then you cant get a big enough lense.

I don't own one but I've tried one a couple times and would definitely like to have one. I've seen enough pictures taken with that lens to know it's a good all around lens. Sure, it's not going to be as tack sharp or fast as a 70-200 f2.8 but a 70-200 doesn't reach out nearly as far or cover nearly as much range. It's a near perfect racing lens because of it's range and, I don't know about you, but I don't shoot racing in the near dark so I don't care that it is f6.3 @500mm. God put an ISO control on the camera for a reason, use it if you have to. In normal lighting condiions it's more than a fast enough lens and also focuses quickly enough. I've seen some incredible motorcycle roadracing pics taken with that lens so I know it's no slouch!

Good thing My D200 doesn't Noise up to bad at 1600 ISO. I bet you'd need it with that thing.
Like I said earlier, only if you try to shoot when it's dark. In normal daylight it's plenty fast. Even with faster lenses I still usually stop them down at least that much or more even with very fast shutter speeds.
