Phoenix to become Countdown Event

Has the track been fixed? I'm happy for the track that they changed the date and that they are in the countdown.

I guess Tom Compton doesn't realize why the Phoenix race was moved from Oct. In the First place? Let's see how well the fans will like sitting in 100+ degrees! dumb move...

I guess this means Reading will be moved back to the regular season? That would be a shame considering the record setting possibilities Reading offers in October.

Joe, ironically the Phoenix race has had issues with weather over the past few years. I've lived there, and my family is still there, and I can say usually by October the weather starts to get very enjoyable. I wonder which events will comprise the countdown, because having Pomona, Phoenix, and Vegas grouped together sure makes sense travel-wise. Oh and remember, Phoenix may get hot, but it's a dry heat! :D

Ditto to what Joe said. I live in the Phoenix area and remember going to the Fall Nationals at Firebird in October and having sweltering heat and a track so hot that full runs were a rarity.

Nunzio I went to the '89 Fall Natl's and it was miserable as Hell! Don't know how hot it got, but it sucked! Moving it to Feb. Was awesome!

Hot means increased beer sales.... LOL
Not much different than vegas a couple weeks later really.

reading can have all the fake 'top ten' drama and end the 'regular season'.
whatever:rolleyes: IT'S JUST A RACE!

southwest a great place to live for fall nhra nat. events.

I take it NHRA plans on running Phoenix, Vegas and Pomona the last 3 Natl. Events. Is it just me, or is this Oversaturation for that part of the country?

Yeah it's still pretty toasty in Oct. there. We used to race the event when it was in Oct. and it was miserable.

Maybe you guys are right, I thought by October it was getting really nice, I haven't lived there since '97. Maybe after summer temps in the teens 100 degrees feels cool! Actually it does.

It's 4 PM and 106 degrees out can't what for the cool 88 degrees of OCT.
Lets give it a chance the past few years the weather sucked in Feb.

Harry, if memory serves me correct. It was around 99-102 all 3 days when I was there in '89! If Firebird has any kind of Traction problems now, what will they be like at 135 degrees???

Dumb move by NHRA, oversaturation is true in this economic time, I will only go one day to Phx race and save my vacation time to go to Vegas race, Better race- Pro Mods-, Better weather, it will still be 100 degrees here or high 90s, unless they make it a night race, Ive been season ticket holder at Firebird for many years, the Nostalgia FC show last yr was 3rd weekend of Oct. was not comfortable till after sun went down, February race used to draw a lot of people from around country and Canada, most wanting a break from winter weather, wont happen in Oct, especially if you wait 2 weeks to hit Vegas race, Better City to visit more to do there, also check back at the car counts last few yrs at Firebird for the Pacific Street Car Association races in fall, then check out car counts for PSCA race in Vegas in Nov, less than 1/2 come here, too hot, no crowd.

this isn't just me being biased to RP like I've always been, however, going back to the Fallnationals in Phoenix for the first time since 1989 (the last time Shirley Muldowney won an NHRA Wally), why can't they do that W/E-town, you talk about Mine-shaft conditions, just by going to the Shakedown in October says it all, and it could be a 2 race swing for the northeast contention w/Maple Grove and E-Town. I woulda digged that big time because it seems NHRA & RP Can't get a break with the rain no matter how hard they try to shuffle it around ever since trying to avoid the hot humid July (Moving to May was fine at one pont, but then 4 of the last 5 May Races had plague by rain (I was at the day when it rained in 2002 & 2003) and 1999 was finished on Monday and 2000 was pushed to After Indy in Sept. They moved it around in June, first fathers day weekend, then the first weekend of Summer to the weekend before fathers day. At First we had the VERY HOT Weather in 2004, and no problems with rain at all for a few years, then the forgettable 2008 year when Rain finally reared it's ugly head (briefly but it did) on Sunday, was a factor throughout the 2009 event and pushed some lucas oil action to Monday and this year, all the finals were run on Monday as the weather got worse through the weekend from the Stellar conditions of Friday. I say try moving the RP Event to a later date when you get those mineshaft conditions.

Yeah, I went to every national event Firebird held up until about 3 years ago. The Fall races could go either way. Sometimes we were melting ice on our arms to stay cool and then some years it was nice. October is nice here, but that's because we deal with 100-110+ for for months, the 90's seems cool :D
