GRAND BEND, ONT. – Practice will make perfect and for defending IHRA Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock World Champion Pete Berner, he might not be number one after today’s IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals qualifying – but he’s in striking distance. His regimen of testing continues to pay rich dividends.
Berner covered the Grand Bend Motorplex quarter-mile in 6.363 seconds at 219.27 miles per hour for the sixth spot.
“This is a track where you get a quick and fast baseline,” Berner said. “The track has already proven it can take whatever we throw at it. Tonight, we really started middle of the road and tomorrow we’ll gradually turn up the wick.”
Berner spent much of Wednesday testing at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park (formerly U.S. 131 Dragway) with a few new and innovative products that he may or may not run this weekend. He’s not divulging any secrets other than to say, “You’ll know quickly when we have them on there.”
Berner is aware that he’ll need to step up his efforts tomorrow as the quickest seven qualifiers are a 6.367 elapsed time or better. One driver is already into the 6.2-second realm.
“That tells us all we need to know,” Berner said. “We’ll be ready for tomorrow. I think today gives us plenty of reasons to be excited.”
