Debuting a new Junior Dragster, Penton managed to charge his way through qualifying and five rounds of eliminations to take his place in the final and in that event managed to come away with the victory spoils, easing the pain of finishing runner up two years prior.
"This year the aim was to go one better than we did back in 2005, and to actually do it and take out the East Coast Nationals for the Junior Dragster category was, and still very is, a sensational feeling," explained an very pleased Penton.
"To debut a car that we only had started work on two weeks prior to the East Coast Nationals [due to a delay in parts from overseas] and walk away with victory is wonderful and it wouldn't have been possible without the continual efforts of my father."
Father, Jeff Penton and operator of JMP Automotive in Bargo, plays a vital role in his 14-year-old son's racing, and Darryl was full of praise for his efforts, and added the fact that it was an early father's day present.
"Not only is it great to win for my own satisfaction, but it also counted as a early father's present, although I still didn't get out of buying him a present it was just an added bonus for him," remarked Darryl.
"My father puts so much effort into my racing, as he engineers my Junior Dragster and it's a brilliant feeling being able to reward him with my very first major victory."
With his maiden victory now in his grasp, Penton is now focused on continuing his success throughout the 2007/08 season.
"The aim is to continue to claim more victories and I'm confident we can achieve that," said the teenager.
"Basically straight out of the box my car was on the pace and with more development to come things are looking good for the remainder of the season as we obviously want to build on this first-up success."
Penton heads into his next event, which is set down for Saturday September 29 at Western Sydney International Dragway, brimming with confidence.
