Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

I don't know Jon... This may have made sense in 72, or even 80 when the cars that were threatened were 1940-1960 range, but now with the advent of Barrett-Jackson and Year One, the idea that we may be losing anything of value is moot..

I think this is geared twords losing a few of the true junkers that are on the road- nobody is silly enough to think that a 57 Chevy or a 69 Cuda is gonna make it to the crusher. So we lose a few 81 Chrysler New Yorkers or a 92 Mercury Marquis- seems like anyone owning something like that might be due for a new, cleaner, more fuel efficient ride anyway. And I'm pretty sure they wont be coming to my door anytime soon to tow away my 78 Club Cab... Not without a check or a fight..

I watch the SEMA boards and they do good work, but this one IMO has a pretty weak leg to stand on. Now lets see if it does actually get foks buying new cars (yeah-right..)
