BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O'Bannon and the Tequila Patrón/Forest River RV's team may have lost the proverbial battle in the quarterfinal round of this past weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, but they feel they gained a lot of ground in the 'war.' O'Bannon feels some clutch adjustments made over the weekend have the team heading in the right direction.
O'Bannon, 29, of Ontario, Calif., qualified the Jack O'Bannon Racing Dodge Charger tuned by Sam Shockley fourth in the field with a 5.645 second elapsed time at 257.28 mph. In round one he took out Burl Brown with a 5.767 at 256.45 mph. O'Bannon's quarterfinal round opponent would be Von Smith. O'Bannon's mount launched into heavy tireshake, slowing him to a 5.742 at 252.28 mph which wasn't enough for Smith's 5.604 at 255.73 mph.
"We found some issues in the clutch this weekend," said O'Bannon. "Now we just have to compensate for the changes we made, which I'm confident if we had another run at it, we could have been right there. Like we've said all along, it just takes laps down the track to get one of these cars figured out. Our mph shows we are making good power, we just need to continue to refine our clutch combination. Sam and the guys are doing a great job, and hopefully we can go a few more rounds with this Tequila Patrón/Forest River RV's Charger at the next stop in Vegas. We'll be testing somewhere next weekend to get ready."
The next stop for the Tequila Patrón/Forest River RV's Charger will be the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Apr. 11-13.
