O'Bannon loses close decision in semifinals

WOODBURN, Ore. – Second-year NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O’Bannon and the Tequila Patrón/Forest River RV’s backed team lost a close decision in the semifinals of this past weekend’s Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore. O’Bannon was able to maintain fifth in national points standings.
O’Bannon, 29, of Ontario, Calif., qualified the Sam Shockley tuned ’08 Chevy Monte Carlo on the pole with a 5.884 second elapsed time at 249.58 mph. In round one, he defeated Larry Miner with a 5.940 at 246.98 mph setting up a semifinal matchup with fellow Division 6 title contender Brian Hough. O’Bannon manhandled his mount down the tricky track, but lost a close decision to Hough with a 5.961 at 242.65 mph to Hough’s 5.954 at 247.93 mph.
“This weekend was one of those deals where lane choice was critical,” said O’Bannon. “That left lane had some pretty bad bumps on it down track and it would get pretty hairy down there. We thought we could get down it and stayed with it in the first round, but it just didn’t work out. We’ll just bounce back and try to get them in Seattle next week.”
O’Bannon and the Tequila Patrón/Forest River RV’s team will stay on the road this week and head to Seattle for this weekend’s Schuck’s Auto Supply Nationals at Pacific Raceways.
