Any 'Maters get a DVD in the mail from NHRA that you didn't order? I read on Yellowbullet that a few people have got one in the mail and are saying it includes a letter which says you'll be billed if it's not sent back. Just a FYI: USPS rules say if something is sent to you unsolicited it is yours to keep and you do not have to pay for it!

Un-asked for DVD

I haven't seen anything yet.

Hot Rod magazine did this a few years ago. I still have the thing. Don't think I ever watched it.....

I believe you're right about the Postal Service rules about that.

What's the DVD about???

To my surprise, I got mine today, the dvd is called the first 50 years, cost is $12.95. I don't have to review this dvd, is it any good?

I got one in the mail today...

There is a slip you're supposed to return with an option checked:

1. "I enjoyed this special DVD and have enclosed payment of $12.95. I'd also like to start previewing other selections in the On the Throttle DVD Collection every 2-3 months at the regular Member price plus shipping and handling"

or

2. I'm returning the loose DVD and Member Reply Form - at no cost to me - using the attached postage-paid envelope. Please send no further DVDs

The package appears to be from a company called "Product Programs." Sounds to me like they made a DVD and paid the NHRA for access to the member database.

At the bottom of the letter it does say "Because you didn't ask for this special introductory DVD, you are under no obligation to do anything and can consider it a free gift"

Well there you have it. Don't know why people are getting their panties in a wad.

Here is why they get wadded Sam. Just keep that disc for a few months and wait til you get the letters and threat letter about 6 months from now. Let me know how that all works out.

Sent them a nice F.U. strong letter to follow with the wadded up disc and sent one from the attorney letterhead as well. Haven't heard much since.:p

I got one yesterday too. I find myself a bit confused  If I don't want to receive any more DVD offers, I send back the DVD and the reply form, yet they say because I didn't ask for this special introductory DVD, I am under no obligation to do anything and can consider it a free gift. What happens if I keep the DVD and send back the reply card telling me not to send me anything else?

Hot Rod magazine did this to me a couple years ago. They sent me a couple issues ( not sure how many? It's been a while ) and wanted me to be the one to stop the issues by replying. Some how or other I wound up getting a whole years worth and then the never ending solicitation for renewing and more issues. Pretty soon I started getting collection letters wanting me to pay for the subcription I had been getting. Take one guess how that worked out for them. One nasty letter later everything suddenly stopped.

I hate junk mail and crap like this with a passion.

Remember Columbia's record deal? 11 albums for a penny and each month you'd get an invoice saying what album will be shipped if they don't get it back saying you don't want it. Or the magazine deals..they can't get away with that crap anymore.

I received it in the mail yesterday. The letter that comes with it could be considered very confusing.
The first page of the letter says:
"I've sent this to you as a no-obligation preview so that you can make the best informed decision about it".
Next paragraph: "If you choose to keep the DVD, it's available at the discounted NHRA member price of only $12.95".
On the back of the page it says:
"Because you didn't ask for this special DVD, you don't have to participate or send it back and can consider it a free gift. No question asked".
It's also interesting that if you decide not to keep the DVD the return envelope is a "No postage necessary if mailed in the United States" but on the "Member reply form" you have to provide the postage.
I am not a NHRA member, cancelled my membership 3 years ago, and consider this as "non solicited junk mail" from a organization that I no longer belong to and can do whatever I want with it without any obligation.
I'am going to keep the DVD and letter and not return a reply. If I receive a bill in the future I will turn this over the the US Postal Service.
Any comments?

Terry will wait with you. Same thing as I did last year. Then the letters started coming in.

I got more mail from the DVD company by not sending it back than when I did not re-new NHRA membership after 30 plus years. Received one notice my membership was due. No hey we want you back or... Obviously great offers and things like this are much more important than keeping membership up.

Why Should I Read This Notice?

We want you to understand how we collect and use information from visitors on our website. This notice explains what kind of information we collect, how we use it, and when we may disclose it to others. If you give us permission to collect or use personal information from your child under age 13 and we make any material changes in how we plan to use that information, we will notify you of this change and require that you give us renewed permission for these new uses.

What is Personal Information?

"Personal information" is information that identifies a person or allows a person to be located. Examples of personal information include a name, a home address, an e-mail address, a telephone number, photograph, or a Social Security number.

When Do We Collect Personal Information from Your Child and What Kind of Information is Collected?

There are several forum in which we may actively collect information from your child under age 13, including: Jr. Membership, E-Newsletter, Contests and Polls, and the NHRA Store.

1. Jr. Membership

We collect personal information from your child when your child registers to become an NHRA member. Specifically, we collect your child's name, mailing address, telephone number, date of birth, and gender, and may obtain credit card information to process the membership application. We also collect personal information from your child (i.e., name and mailing address) when your child requests that NHRA's Jr. Membership driving participants waiver forms be sent to them by mail.

2. E-Newsletter

We collect personal information from your child when your child requests to be added to the NHRA E-Newsletter mailing list. Specifically, we collect your child's name and e-mail address.

3. Contests and Polls

We collect personal information from your child for participation in contests or sweepstakes. For our Jr. Dragster contest(s), we collect your child's name and e-mail address, and may collect your child's age, address, and phone number. From time to time, we offer polls or surveys on the NHRA website. Our site will prevent multiple votes made by the same IP address, but no personal information is collected.

4. NHRA Store

When your child wants to buy a product offered from our online NHRA store, we also collect the personal information necessary for the transaction such as name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address, and credit card information.

What Do We Do With the Personal Information We Collect?

We may use the personal information we collect from your child to respond to user requests (e.g., to be added to the E-newsletter mailing list, to contact the winner of a prize, to keep membership records, or to verify or process transactions), or to provide children with information requested in a one-time transaction (e.g., responding to an inquiry about NHRA's next race event or location to purchase products). Personal information collected to comply with a child's one-time request will be discarded after NHRA has responded to the child's request. Non-personally identifying information, such as session cookies, will be used to help us improve and update our site based on recorded use. NHRA cannot, and does not, condition a child's participation in an activity on the child's disclosure of more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate in the activity.

Do We Disclose Personal Information About Your Child?

We may disclose information we collect about your child from a membership transaction in the form of a member/subscriber record to other third party companies by way of sale, lease or rental agreement. The types of businesses in which such third parties are engaged include the following: racing, mail order parts, apparel, publishing, and other or related similar third-party marketers.

We may disclose the name and age of a winner of a NHRA contest in NHRA's print newspaper, Jr. DRAGSTER or displaying it on our website.

Of course, online purchases require us to disclose necessary payment information to payment processors. We also may use third parties to send you the products you purchase, in which case we would provide them with your name, mailing address, and other information necessary to complete your order.

Agreements with third parties will provide that such third parties will not use or disclose the information for purposes other than those purposes contracted for, and will also require the third parties to maintain the confidentiality, security and integrity of such information.

You have the option to agree to let us collect your child's personal information for activities on our website, but to not allow us to disclose the information to third parties. To prevent disclosure to third parties, please check the appropriate box in our parental consent form.

Disclosure Without Consent.

In certain limited circumstances, we may collect and disclose personal information from your child without first obtaining your consent. These circumstances are described as follows:

It will be necessary for us to collect your child's name and online contact information, and the name and online contact information of the child's parent, in order to provide the parent with notice of our information practices and to seek the parent's consent for the collection and/or disclosure of information about the child. Should any child's parent not respond within ninety days thereafter, then we will delete that child's and his/her parent's information at that time.

We may collect your child's name and online contact information in order to respond on a one-time basis to a specific request from your child (i.e., upon request from the child, we may e-mail to the child information about our website). After responding the child's name and information will be deleted.

We may collect your child's and parent's name and online contact information in order to respond directly more than once to a specific request of the child (i.e., to provide membership publications, or a contest entry and subsequent award), but in these cases the child must first be registered with us as a Jr. Member as required under this policy before we will respond.

Under certain circumstances we may collect and/or disclose information as is necessary to protect the safety of a child participating in our website, or to comply with law or legal process, or to protect the security and integrity of our website.
