JEGS TAPS RIPES AT GRAND MARSHAL/HONORARY STARTER FOR PACIFIC SPORTSNATIONALS
Marv Ripes, founder of A-1 Automatic Transmissions, has been selected for the dual role of Grand Marshal and Honorary Starter for the NHRA Jegs Pacific SPORTSnationals.
Ripes founded A-1 in 1959 as a 24-year-old racer and is credited with many innovations in racing transmission technology. All these years later, with a new partner on board, Marv is looking to the future of A-1 Automatic Transmissions. He continues to be involved in the company and together with Adam Bowdish is ushering in a new era for A-1.
Known throughout the industry as a friend to all Sportsman racers, Ripes is a fixture in the pits at NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events in the Northwest and Pacific divisions and many NHRA national events.
“Marv is celebrating 50 years in the drag racing industry. That’s an astounding feat,” said Jegs’ Scott “Woody” Woodruff. “He is well-known in drag racing, especially on the West Coast, so we thought making him the Grand Marshal/Honorary Starter for the Jegs Pacific SPORTSnationals was a perfect opportunity to recognize his accomplishments.”
The NHRA Jegs Pacific SPORTSnationals will be October 3-5, 2008 at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif. As Grand Marshal/Honorary Starter, Ripes will preside over Sunday’s pre-race ceremonies.

The strip was dubbed California Dragway.
In October of the same year the first weekend of the Street Legal Racing program at California Dragway was held for a capacity crowd of racers eager for a place to show off their talents in a controlled, safe environment.
California Dragway hosted its first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in September of 2005 and had nearly 500 competitors take to the quarter-mile. In 2006, the drag strip was moved from Lot 1 of Auto Club Speedway to a more permanent home on the north side of the oval and was renamed Auto Club Dragway. The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series made its second stop at the facility in June and increased the car count by more than 100. In October of 2006 NHRA brought the popular SPORTSnationals series to the West Coast and Auto Club Dragway, with its proximity to historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, was the perfect venue for the event.
