I see that IHRA has decided to run 1320 feet in all their classes next year. That brings an interesting situation: When the first TF team lays down a good pass, the IHRA can honestly claim to race the fastest vehicles in the country.

Other than possibly during the nitro ban, I can't think of a single time in history when that's ever happened. The five second barrier was broken under their sanction, but I don't recall the MPH record for them.

And please, no sophomoric comments about not caring about the safety of their drivers.

There's an answer out there, but it will take the right party to get it done. Did you ever wonder why all of the tower complexes built onto existing tracks in the 80s look pretty much alike?

That's because Winston, seeing the need to step up drag racing's image, paid for the plans and financed them to any track willing to make the committment. Yes, tobacco's gone, but isn't there anyone out there willing to do the same and make sure every track needing one gets a high tech arresting system?

Fuel cars blew up 40 years ago and they blow up now...S**T happens...Its time to find a logical answer instead of shortening the race surface? How many cars have you seen blow up at a 1000 ft? I know i cant count all of them that ive seen.

Well that depends on what HRA you follow. If you like nhra you would be familiar with those names, if you follow Ihra you would know those names.

But to concider one "First" over the other, is just a mater of opinion I guess.

True , I see your point . Though I don't follow IHRA not because I don't like it only because they don't show here in New Zealand they only show NHRA and even then only on satelite tv .

Thats gotta be tough, only get to see one.

I was just wondering what criteria (sp) he used to give "First" to nhra.

number of natl. events.........

number of tracks.......

he refered to MPH, maybe thats what he used???
just curious

I was just referring to the absolute top speed mark. But I guess you could also say it's also because of what you mentioned and more, Paul.

Or number of members, prize payout, contingency payout, size of of the magazine, TV package, number of racers, Fortune 500 sponsors, etc.

I'm sure not trying to make a value judgement, if that's what you're thinking. I've raced and worked with both HRAs (and the AHRA, truth be told) and I'm not smart enough to say one is "better" than another. I wouldn't even try.

But by almost any measure, NHRA is (and has been) the senior drag racing association in the world.

Oh, puleeze... how many times do we have to have this thread?

Another moderator drive-by? And in yet another insulting tone?

Personally, I found it newsworthy. I'm sorry it didn't meet your standards.

Hopefully in time I can gain the experience and wisdom to meet your approval and discernment.

And hopefully you can learn to disagree without sounding like a teenager.

I was looking back at top speeds from last year and with a few exceptions (Strasburg and McMillen), NHRA at 1,000ft is equal or slightly faster then IHRA at 1,320. I am willing to bet NHRA will still be the bigger show. The IHRA will be lucky to survive without Nitro and Alcohol Funny Car and with many of the Pro Stock cars leaving for the ADRL.

I doubt the NHRA is the least bit worried about anything that happens in IHRA! Not anymore anyway, ever since Bill Bader got out of it and Took Norwalk Raceway Park with him they've been falling fast!

Sorry Dan, but this thread (especially the title) holds absolutely no water, on several accounts.

There is no way that any Top Fuel team will commit the resources that the Army Team has to run in the IHRA. With that said, there will never be any 336+ mph passes in IHRA, never, so how can they say they've taken over No.1?

Once more, when the NHRA does return to the full quarter, we can expect to see times and speeds from 10-15 years ago, so maybe the performances will be behind the IHRA.

But to say IHRA is No.1 is really reaching for the sky. I went to the San Antonio IHRA event a few years ago, then the very next weekend, the NHRA event in Houston, talk about night and day. The NHRA event runs like clock work, you feel like you're getting your money's worth, it's a very professional production. The IHRA event was no comparison. Oil downs after oildowns from under funded teams trying to run out of their leagues, very slow clean up crews, and not to mention having to listen to a couple of Yayhoos on the public address system all day. It was a minor league production once you've been to an NHRA National event.

When it was driving down the 1000' sucks path, it is definitely old... xHRA differences are intriguing, but if we just need another way to say 1000' sucks I think that horse is long since dead.

Sorry dan, but the distance of the track does NOT make IHRA a bigger draw than the NHRA. There are so many reasons the NHRA circus is a better draw.

I think we've fallen off what the intended question was (I think)

I think the point was what happens if ihra at 1320 goes faster mph then nhra at 1000. What claims would that give Ihra over Nhra?

As Paul pointed out it appears even with less distance the n side is still faster usually however it is interesting. I think that IHRA could use it as a marketing ploy. I think nhra has commercials where it says fastest sport on earth or something like that, ihra could combat that. Relistically though it would be shaky as at any event who had the better mph could change.

I would think their best bet from a marketing standpoint would be the point out that they are still 1320 and could run with that. That may help draw some people angry over the 1000 but with the classes they're dropping it may not be enough.

Thank you, PJ.

I have no idea why people felt compelled to read a bunch of hidden meaning into my message.

I'm just thinking ahead to the time when an IHRA TF car runs 320 or so. I don't think anyone in NHRA will be able to go that fast in 1000 feet this year.

When it happens, will IHRA market it? Will the NHRA feel the need to change their marketing?

And, most importantly, if the IHRA chooses to open that box of worms will it be effective for them?

Lots of "what if's" there, but to give my .02 on them...
If a IHRA TF goes 320mph, no big deal. nhra's TF has been faster than Ihra's for years and IHRA did not fold up.

By the same, IHRA's P/S ers have been faster + quicker than nhra's P/S for years, no big thing.

I don't think it will have any effect on the fans. If the show is close and they want to go, I don't think what "HRA" it is will matter to the drag fan.
