NEW CREW CHIEF PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR JOHNSON;MONSTER ENERGY TEAM LOOKING FOR VEGAS JACKPOT

LAS VEGAS --If you took a poll among NHRA drivers, most would say that Vegas is their favorite place to race. Tommy Johnson, Jr., driver of the Monster Energy Funny Car, is no exception.
Johnson has good reason to be excited about the upcoming ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals Oct.31-Nov. 2.
“The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of our favorite tracks on the tour,” said Johnson. “First of all it’s a premier facility. Secondly, we won here in 2001 in the spring and followed that with a runner-up in 2002 and 2006 so we have a history of success here.
“More than that, our team has been making remarkable progress with the addition of crew chief Mike Kloeber two races ago. In fact we’ve come a long way.
“Any time you go back to a track where you’ve won a trophy, it gives you a little extra confidence. Add to that the way Mike has the car running right now and we feel we have as good a chance as anybody to win.
“I’m more excited about this race than any of the others all year. I just wish it were the beginning of the year instead of the end.”
Las Vegas also marks the fourth and final event in a test program with the U.S. Air Force.
“We have enjoyed our association with the men and women of the Air Force and we’re proud to fly their logo,” continued Johnson.
“Of course the city of Las Vegas lures you with the bright lights, night life and entertainment. We have New York -New York Hotel and Casino onboard with us in Vegas. They have a new ROK Vegas™ nightclub that we can’t wait to check out. It would be a big weekend for Monster, Kenny (Bernstein, team owner) and all our sponsors if we could make a run for the trophy at the ACDelco race.”
Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the ACDelco Nationals begins Friday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 p. m. with a second session at 4 p. m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p. m. and 3:30 p. m. with eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a. m.
