COMMERCE, Ga. (April 29) – The Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car team made its quickest run this season clocking 4.763/322.27 during Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals qualifying.
After earning the No. 7 qualifying berth in the coveted top half of the field, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to face Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations.
Bernstein lost traction at the hit of the throttle, while Worsham negotiated the quarter-mile in 4.869 seconds at 308.92 mph.
“We have clutches that have levers on them that are set to engage at different stages as we traverse the racetrack,” explained Bernstein. “When we hit the throttle to leave the starting line, all the levers engaged at the same time, which caused us to lose traction. It was a fluke mechanical malfunction.”
Bernstein is 12th in NHRA Funny Car point standings, 38 points outside the countdown to eight, heading into the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals May 4-6 in Madison , Ill.
