EPPING, N.H. – When you're in the top five all time in wins in your class, you hold two world titles, and have set several world records people don't expect you to struggle but that's what Mike Janis has been doing all season. At least until now.
At the Amalie Oil North American Nationals Presented by The New England Dodge Dealers at New England Dragway in Epping New Hampshire Eaton Sponsored Mike Janis paced the field from start to finish and on his way Janis set a new IHRA Top Speed Record of 240.21 miles per hour.
Right out of the box Janis laid claim to New England Track Speed Record with a 6.064 pass at a blistering 239.74 M.P.H., breaking the existing track record by over 3 miles per hour. Janis failed to improve during the last session but held on to the number one qualifying position.
In round one Janis squared off with points leader, Scott Cannon. Cannon, the Lyman, S.C. native, qualified his Torco Skull Gear Pontiac in the ninth position with a 6.164 at 214.93. While Janis was able to flex the muscle of his Jan-Cen Motorsports prepared power plant early in the run against Cannon Janis slowed near the finish due to a part failure. Janis ran an awesome 3.967 e.t. to half-track posting a speed just over 189 M.P.H. before slowing. Even with the parts attrition Janis was able to hold off Cannon for the win.
After thrashing to rebuild their wounded bullet Janis and Matt Hagan lined up round two. Hagan at the wheel of his Jan-Cen equipped Torco Accelerator 63 Corvette and Janis at the wheel of his Jan-Cen Powered Eaton and Aeroquip sponsored Cobalt. The two showed the New England crowd what Pro Mod is all about old versus new body styles and raw horsepower. Hagan went on a wild ride overpowering the track while Janis ran her straight down Broadway posting a new IHRA Top Speed Record of 240.21 miles per hour.
"We hurt her bad against Scott," said Crew Chief Mike Janis Junior. "Somehow she broke a fuel shut off valve causing her to kill the fuel to the motor and eat up all eight slugs. If it wasn't for Matt Hagan and his crew we never would have made it to the next round. Matt, John (Vouros), and Dan (Martin) really went out of their way to make sure we got to the line against them and we can't thank them enough. They are a class team".
In the semi-finals Janis squared off with the only active competitor with more championships than himself, Shannon Jenkins. Jenkins made it to the semis after qualifying third with a 6.09 and defeating Jim Halsey and Danny Rowe.
The two veterans faced off in a nitrous versus blower duel with Janis taking the win light in fuel-altered fashion. "She was a handful that round. It took some work to keep her off the line and get to the other end," said Janis.
In the final Janis would hold lane choice over defending series champ Quain Stott. Stott defeated Ed Hoover, Mike Castellana, and Jason Hamstra en route to the finals. With the two staged it was Janis out of the gate well before what one could only assume as a wounded Stott. Stott was extremely late off the line and shut down almost immediately letting Janis run off with his 16 th career IRON MAN.
"After the year we've been having struggling, this is great," said Janis. "I made it to the final in Grand Bend but couldn't win. Small things have been biting us all year and today we ran consistent and it finally came together."
Next up for the Eaton sponsored team is a trip to the Milan Dragway just outside of Detroit. Milan Dragway is the home track of Janis' sponsor Eaton and host of the Suzuki Motor City Nationals Presented by GM performance Division from Friday – Sunday, August 24-26, 2007
