Mike Janis’ Eaton and Aeroquip Sponsored Team is Hoping “The Third Time is a Charm”

October 16, 2006 - Elma, NY – Mike Janis’ hopes for a third IHRA Pro Modified World Championship took a hit at the recently completed Torco Racing Fuels President’s Cup Nationals, when Janis fouled out with an uncharacteristic red light start.

“I was really up for the run and I guess I just anticipated the light. It’s my fault and there’s nothing we can do about it now except do our best in Rockingham,” said Janis. “It’s going to be tough. There are some really good teams and drivers that still have a shot at a title going into the last race. All we can do is go there and run our race and not worry about who else does what”.

As Janis stated there are no less than 6 drivers who still have mathematical shots at a title heading into the Universal Technical Institute World Finals. Leading the pack is Quain Stott of Columbus, N.C. Stott, who is known among his fellow racers, as a “true racer” has never won a World Championship. He has come close several times including a second place finish in 2000. Quain Stott has even had to sit by as his brother, Mitch Stott, won a World Title in 2003. Stott has two wins this season in two final round appearances.

Calgary, Alberta’s Glen Kerunsky is holding in the second position for now just 10 points behind Stott. Kerunsky who lead the points for most of the season has struggled of late and relinquished the lead to Stott at the recently completed event in Maryland. Kerunsky has one win this season in three final round appearances. Kerunsky is a former WCPMA (West Coast Pro Modifieds Association) Series Champion (2003). Kerunsky has fared well in his previous IHRA action but has never won an IHRA World Championship.

In third place, thirty points behind point’s leader Quain Stott, is Two Time IHRA Pro Modified World Champion (2001 and 2004) is Lancaster, New York’s Mike Janis. Janis has had his ups and downs this season but he has won two of three finals rounds. Janis is also the only driver in the hunt with a previous IHRA Championship under his belt.

Sitting in fourth is Danny Rowe. Rowe is just 33 points off the leader. He, like Kerunsky, is also a former WCPA title holder (2000). While only making one final round appearance and having no wins Rowe has been a picture of consistency this season. Rowe has benefited from his crew chief, Jimmy Rector’s, past championship experience. Rector has won World titles both as a driver and a crew chief. As a driver Rector won an IHRA world title in 2002 and he also tuned Mitch Stott to a Pro Modified title in 2003.

In fifth is Quain Stott’s hired gun, Tommy D’Aprile. D’Aprile of Port Charlotte, Fl is 57 points out of the top spot. D’Aprile has two final round appearances this season with no wins. With Quain Stott owning D’Aprile’s ride the duo will be hard to stop.

Sixth in points and a long shot for the title is Jordan Station, Ontario’s Carl Spiering. While mathematically still a factor Spiering’s chances for a title are very slim. Sitting 103 points off the pace heading into the final race puts Spiering at a huge disadvantage but, he can still effect the outcome of the title race with a good performance at the Universal Technical Institute World Finals in Rockingham, NC.

Lead Mechanic for Mike Janis’ Eaton and Aeroquip Sponsored team, Steve Hermann, feels confident that his team has what it takes to win the 2006 title. “We’ve been here before and we know what we need to do. We’ll have our hot rod ready. We plan on getting some on track testing in before the World Finals and having our program in order before we even get to the track,” said Hermann.
