I bet there are alot of drivers who would love to be back out there. I remember when KC Spurlock was on here, people would keep asking him "When are you coming back?" I got thinking how thats an interesting question especially when most ride less drivers don't have a car they can just jump into. It made me realise that there are 4 reasons a driver would not have a ride those 4 are.

1. They quit
2. They ran out of money either their own or a sponsors for example a sponsor leaving.
3. They lost their seat
4. They weren't able to race for some reason

Sure does but also covers say if someone can't drive but not by being let go or choosing to quit say a medical reason or something.

I wish Paul would stop talking altogether and just leave it to Dunn, the world's greatest racing color commentator. I also think it's sad that a driver of Dunn's ability on every aspect of the car, his absolute graciousness with fans (ever had a driver thank YOU for asking for an autograph? Dunn did when I got his back in the '90's) and sheer coolness isn't racing, but some of today's drivers with no ability but financial backers are still out there. I can't think of a guy I'd rather see racing today than Mike Dunn.

Yes, it is in the dictionary. But read the definition and you will see that it is nonstandard English and therefore not generally acceptable. The original point is a good one. Well spoken people do not use the word.

Who cares?

Stop being a grammar cop and just appreciate Mike Dunn for what he is: a damn good analyst.

I would love to see Dunn in a car but at least he does a good job on the broadcasts.

Every time I hear that word, I think of the old "I Love Lucy" episode where it was clear "irregardless" was not a "proper" word.

PS: Pretty certain it was "I Love Lucy":)

Irregardless Mike Dunn you have earned the right to use any words you want when it comes to drag racing. When he was driving and was interveiwed he was always a straight shooter.

I don't think that Mike cares if people consider him well-spoken.

This whole thread is pretty ridiculous. Mike is a driver that has transitioned into a broadcast position and is excelling at it. His wealth of knowledge and experience is much more important than whether he uses 'irregardless' or not. He's not a language professor.

Are you saying it is ridiculous to ask a sports commentator to use correct grammar on the air? That IS his job now, not a driver. And yes, of course he cares what people think of his work.
Those of us here know that Mike is more than qualified to be in that seat, but the person tuning in for the first time (who doesnt know who he is) would most likely dismiss him as being incompetent (at the very least, as an commentator).
And again... Mike , you rock.

Really?

Go around and ask people what they think of the word 'irregardless'. I really don't think they'd care.
