MARTIN, Mich. --Mike Ashley’s primary objective headed into the IHRA Torco Northern Nationals was to deliver a victory for sponsor/team owner Evan Knoll. Saturday night he moved one step closer and reached a personal milestone in the process.
Ashley stood on the strength of Friday night’s 4.866, 311.99 to claim his first career nitro Funny Car pole position.
“I am very proud of what our team has accomplished this weekend,” said Ashley. “Brian Corradi and the guys delivered in a big way. I was just along for the ride. The most important thing is that we are gaining laps with this new car. The more runs we make means the more we learn. We have learned a lot this weekend. This has helped us prepare for next week in Brainerd. But, it’s not over.
“We still have a race we’d like to win and we have all the weapons to do just that. I’m excited about our chances.”
Ashley dominated qualifying landing the quickest run in two of the three sessions. The Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels-sponsored driver posted a 4.958, 300.80 to pace Saturday’s opening session by almost a tenth of a second.
Armed with the confidence of the first two sessions, Ashley and the team aimed to raise the bar even more in the final session.
“We were going to get after it,” Ashley said. “It just didn’t work out the way we had hoped but we learned the valuable lesson of what the track will hold and what it won’t. We are ready for Sunday.”
Ashley will meet Paul Lee in the first round of eliminations.
