Methanol Fuel Permitted for Nitrous Cars in AMS Pro Mod Challenge

DALLAS, Texas (March 24, 2007) - The use of methanol racing fuel in nitrous Pro Modified cars is now allowed in AMS Pro Modified drag racing, series administrators announced Saturday.

"We've been looking for ways to provide increased performance capabilities for the nitrous cars, and, according to our research, the use of alcohol will potentially increase horsepower by seven to ten percent," series director Matthew Brammer said.

"I understand this can affect the engine combination and set up drastically, and we’re not trying to add cost or work to anyone, but it's another tool in the nitrous arsenal that can be used. They don't have to, but it's a possibility for them. I know as teams test, they want to have as much available as possible in order to compete, and this is just another thing we've determined can help."

Rule changes from 2006 to 2007 allowed the nitrous cars unlimited engine CID, opening the door for new, different motors in the category.

"It's obvious right now that teams with blowers have found new horsepower, and although I truly believe that anything can - and does - happen on race day, we are trying to support and grow all three configurations: blower, turbo and nitrous," he said.

The change in rules is effective immediately.

The NHRA technical staff is responsible for all rule conformity and enforcement at the AMS Pro Mod races, and they have been involved in the decision to allow the new fuel.

"Jim Collins, Graham Light and the rest of the staff have agreed that the change can be positive, and that they are encouraged by our willingness to be open minded about the rules," Brammer said.

"I love the nitrous cars," he said. "It's so cool when they purge the systems, and if it's a night run, the glow from the headers is awesome to see. The class has deep roots with nitrous, it's a part of our heritage.

"I know that parity among the Pro Mods is a hot topic of discussion, at the track and in chat rooms on the Internet -- especially in light of the numbers the blower cars ran in Gainesville. My personal opinion is that parity is unachievable unless every car is exactly the same - but that's not the nature or the spirit of Pro Mod, or any drag racing for that matter. If we look at the disparity in the Top Alcohol Dragster class, it's apparent that different combinations produce different results, and sometimes, changes need to be proposed. I think this is one of those times.

"I don't want to penalize the blower cars or slow them down - that doesn't make sense to me. Instead, with the different technologies, I think we can provide options, and let the racers, the market forces, if you will, decide what will win. It's what keeps this class exciting - as if we need anything else!" Brammer said.
