Melanie Troxel’s race day began in good fashion Sunday when she scored an opening-round victory over No. 3 Funny Car qualifier Robert Hight in the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

While both cars experienced tire smoke on the 1,000-foot run, Troxel’s Gotham City Racing Dodge Charger R/T didn’t encounter it until she was farther down the track and she turned on the win light in 4.685 seconds at 246.57 mph to Hight’s 5.603 at 128.70.

“Things haven’t been going our way for quite awhile so it was nice to get a little bit of luck in the first round,” she said. “Obviously, we smoked the tires, but you have to be as good as you can and take advantage of those situations when they arise.”

She was eliminated by Tony Pedregon in the quarterfinals. Her performance improved to a 4.294 at 282.54 while Pedregon, who went on the win the race, had a 4.190 at 292.01.

Troxel and the team resume POWERade Series competition Friday in the Toyo Nationals at Reading , Pa.
