Matt Smith Hopes to Continue His Success at Houston

Matt Smith had his best debut at the beginning of a season ever last week in Gainesville, Fla. After splitting from G2 Motorsports at the end of the season last year and going back on his own again, Smith has been working very hard to get things up to par for the 2007 season.

“I have been working 14 and 15 hour days for the last month or so, but as long as it keeps paying off I don’t mind doing so. Running your entire operation yourself not only takes hard-work, but discipline and patience too. I have learned a thing or two from growing up around my dad (Rickie Smith), so I am used to the hard work, it’s just the patience that is having to come with time” said Smith.

Taking the runner-up position a few weeks ago in Gainesville and being the quickest bike of every round on raceday, including making the fourth quickest run in NHRA history during the semi’s, it looks like Smith’s work is paying off well.

Going into the 20th annual O’Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park this weekend, Smith is sitting second in points, the highest he has ever been. His dad won back here in 1999 in Pro Stock so maybe the second-generation racer Smith can pull things off this time around.

“We can always use an extra hand or two in the pits and with Dad being there again this weekend I am hoping to be a bit more relaxed than I was in Gainesville. I have also tested this last week with a new motor and actually ran my quickest 60’ foot time ever, so I think things are finally falling into place with this new team. I just hope we can keep showing it on the racetrack as well,” said Smith.
