POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2013) - Spencer Massey's 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season didn't quite start out the way he had hoped, but in his mind all is well with the Battery Extender powered by Schumacher Top Fuel team.
For the first time since the Reading, Pa., event last fall, Massey was ousted in the first round of competition. Fellow Texas native Steve Torrence used a .034 second reaction time to get an advantage Massey's quicker car couldn't overcome.
"Last year we had 23 races in our season, this year we have 24 races," Massey said. "I'm glad we got our bad one out of the way and we're back on our normal season program now. We have that going for us, which is nice."
Massey also noted that this event could also be viewed as their preseason
testing event.
"We never really had a test session, so this was our test session," he said. "I'm trying to get familiar with the canopy and I could've been better on the light. I was only a .60 and that's my average."
Massey has always been praised for his quick foot but he's already seeing things he can improve on to make himself better in 2013.
"I think all of the other drivers have stepped up their program and went past me. Now I need to start cutting .40 and .50 lights. There were a lot of drivers in that first round that cut .40s and .50s.
"That's what I need to do and I need to push myself to be better on the tree and losing that one gives me that motivation. A couple years ago I was the best and I may have slipped down that list a little bit. Now I have a goal to be back at the top of that list of the drivers with the best reaction time. We'll start working on that in just a few short days in Phoenix."
