BRAINERD, Minn. - Defending NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Spencer Massey scored his second national event win of his short career and this season during this past weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Massey not only took the win, but set low elapsed time and top speed of the meet as well.
Massey, 24, of Ft. Worth, Texas, qualified his A/Fuel Dragster second with a 5.394 at 268.38 mph. In round one, he took out Dave Hedges with a 5.399 at 272.17 mph, then defeated Robin Samsel in round two with a 5.239 at 272.01 mph, which stood as low e.t. of the meet. In the semifinals, he took out the always-tough Marty Thacker by coupling an outstanding .010 reaction time (.000 is perfect) with a 5.273 at 273.88 mph.
Massey's final round opponent would be close friend and former employer, Morgan Lucas. Both drivers left with nearly identical reaction times, but Massey powered to a 5.266 second elapsed time at 276.13 mph to hold off A/Fuel 'slash' Top Fuel driver Lucas' 5.376 at 268.54 mph. Massey's final round speed stood as the top speed of the meet.
"Our first win in Atlanta was nice," said Massey. "But this win felt good because nothing was given to us. We got lucky a few rounds in Atlanta, but we ran strong this weekend. We felt like we earned this win. It's nice to win, set low e.t. and top speed. It was also cool to race Morgan in the final. I used to work for him on his A/Fuel car a couple years ago, and Scotty, one of his crewmembers is my roommate, so we're all good friends. Lucas Oil is an associate sponsor of ours, so it was nice to get the win for them at their race. It was definitely a good weekend."
Massey is quick to point out testing at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas helped with the team's performance this weekend.
"The testing seemed to help," explained Massey. "From here we'll go back home and get everything ready for the Division 5 race in Topeka in a few weeks, then Indy. Indy is a big priority for us."
The win moves Massey, who finished third nationally last year, to fifth. He is just a mere nine points out of third and 19 points out of second. The next event for the team will the be the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., Aug. 25-27.
