Maddi Gordon and Snake Discussion (9 Viewers)

Interesting blog post.....
Snake is old school. I also like the fact he speaks his mind. I also like the fact that Ron sticks with his decision. Madison Gordon is going to do well in Top Fuel. While we don’t know the sponsor or crew chief, but with a top notch tuner I can see her winning some events next year.

Snake has always been a great competitor but always been an a$$. Seeing him in the pits a few years ago with only one other person around him and a kid standing there for an autograph, he totally ignored him and walked away.
One of my favorites quotes is from Antron when he said something like ‘I used to pump septic tanks for a living so I’ll sign autographs all damn day’. Classy guy all the way.

The best to Maddi!

I saw an interview with Shelly Anderson on how Prudhomme blew her off for an autograph when she was a child. She absolutely hated the Snake even when she was a competitor against him. She always gave him an attitude. Don finally asked Brad Anderson what is wrong with Shelly. Brad just laughed and told Don to ask her why she didn’t like him.

Bobby Bennett has entered the conversation:
Bobby, I once asked Snake about Cam 2 oil when he came by Carter’s to check on the new paint, the cam 2 lettering was just done on the front, if he really ran Cam 2 oil in the car at the the track, he looked annoyed and very sternly said, of course I do, do you I would tell you if I didn’t, I said I just wanted to know, after that he treated me good, he always gave the shop helper t-shirts that I wish I still had today, took money from me at darts, he was very focused most of the time but was always fun at the shop.

Snake was trying to sum up the realities of the old days and it came out sounding like the old days. Unfortunate but not unforgivable.
People in the public eye don't always explain what they are thinking when the microphone is on. He was looking back on a different time, and it came out like a knock on Maddi because she is a woman. Probably not what he intended.

Away from the track Snake is pretty much just a regular guy. Sometimes the persona is a burden.

Oh, FYI, he like many of us (myself included) has lost a lot of hearing. So if he doesn't engage, it could be he doesn't see or hear that person.

Snake was considered one of the fiercest competitors in drag racing. Unfortunately he had tunnel vision when he was at the track as a competitor. I don't think he was intentionally an a**hole his personality just didn't allow him to acknowledge the fans like he should have. I have heard him as a guest commentator on nhra tv and he sounds like the nicest guy in the world. He is at the track all day and spends quite a bit of time signing autographs. I think he has mellowed a lot in his old age!

The reality of Don's personality is no different then almost all touring pros, their personality changes over time, because at the races or other events someone is always wanting a piece of them. a autograft, picture, to talk, etc. They are no different than everyone else they get grumpy at times. but a way from the (must be personal) face they must show at the events, they are their same old self. I have set down with Don at number of times, at his choice, he is the same person I have always known. But I can say one that never changed is John Force from day one. what you see is what you get with him. But I also agree with Don about the early days, Would I have recommended Matti to drive a fuel car in those days NO WAY. I raced in those days and we were losing a driver a month at times, we were driving by testosterones not gray mater.
