LUCAS RALLYING FOR THE COUNTDOWN

COMMERCE, Ga. (April 24) – It shouldn’t come as any surprise to see Morgan Lucas back on top of his game. After all, with five runner-up finishes to his credit, the 23-year old Brownsburg, Indiana-resident knew that with the right positioning of team personnel, it would be his launching pad to skyrocket his career back into Top Fuel prominence.

He did just that bringing in noted championship-caliber tuner, Rahn Tobler into his fold to run his Top Fuel operation along with the talented Lance Larsen. The two have become the brain trust of Morgan Lucas Racing.

“We saw a big swing in our performance on Sunday in Las Vegas and we couldn’t be any happier, unless we had won,” said a smiling Lucas. “It felt we were in contention going up to the line to race and made it to the semi-finals. That’s goes to show you how good our team really is. We hadn’t won a round in eliminations all season until that race and now that we’re heading to Atlanta wanting to race more so we can get into the Countdown to the Championship.”

Lucas after the completion of five of 23 NHRA National events finds himself in the No. 12 position in the standings with 183 points and needs to pick up only 83 to secure his entry into the championship chase.

“That’s around four rounds of competition and we still have 12 races remaining,” said Lucas. “After our rough start to the season, that’s refreshing to know we’re that close, but we still have to win those rounds and with the competition nowadays, that’s not going to be easy, by any means.”

Lucas scored his first Low E.T. qualifier at Atlanta in 2005 with his run of 4.541 seconds and has one quarterfinals and one semi-final round appearance attached to his Peach State record.

“Atlanta Dragway will always have a special meaning to me winning my first pole there,” said Lucas. “It’s a fast track and Friday night qualifying should prove that out.”

The start of the 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals begins at the Atlanta Dragway on Friday, April 27 with two qualifying sessions starting at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) with a second session at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's time trials start at 12:30 p.m. for the nitro classes followed by a second session at 3:30 p.m. The race starts promptly at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 29.
